It's harder than you think to eat an elephant.

I've always heard that it's easy to eat an elephant. You just do it one bite at a time. That makes sense, but it's still an elephant. An African elephant can weight from 8,800 - 15,000 pounds. That makes a Thanksgiving dinner seem like a snack.

I'm a big goal setter, but I'm also a big goal failure. I typically set goals for each year. Each goal has a time-frame in which to be completed and then a new one takes it's place, hence the forks full of elephant yummies. What I've found in the past four years is that my goals are more like helium balloons than edible elephant bites. Rather than sitting down for a tasty meal I'm watching my goals drift away off into space.

It hasn't been a bad thing, but the local market has been more like a river that has swollen it's banks than one that is being manipulated down a well defined path. I've found myself at the end of the year going, "Whew! What just happened?"

So, for 2015, I'm not making the typical goals I normally make. This year, I'm going to make process goals rather than achievement goals. I noticed that the achievement seems to find it's own way as long as I'm in the process.  This year, I'll focus on marketing and brand building, office restructuring for maximum utility, course development for my real estate school,  but I'm not going to focus on specific bottom line numbers. I've noticed those numbers seem to find their way beyond my goals when I'm efficient in what I do.

So, for 2015, I'll be eating my elephant with spicy sauce and hopefully by this time in December 2015 I'll be saying, "Whew! What just happened?" And, it will be good.

I set a goal for myself back in 2009.   No more goals until after the election of 2016.

With an unstable economy, setting goals is just asking for disappointment.

The only goal I set for myself is the stretch goal over and above the goal my boss sets for me.  Aside from that, I wing everything else.

I hope you have a great 2015! I usually set one or two big yearly goals and then set individual monthly goals throughout the year.

I had a few "What just happened" moments this year, too, Mike! I do have a sales goal for the year but breaking it up into quarterly or even monthly goal? Forget about it.

Your "other" goals sound quite detailed and realistic to me, that is what counts and what will bring results.

Mike, keep chomping at that elephant and you will be surprised how quickly he begins to slim down.  I hope and pray that 2015 is a great year for your business.

Roger, if you meet your personal objectives and you're happy, I'd say you're ahead of the curve.

Susan, the past few years that seem to be the best game plan.

Thank you, Nicole Doty. I wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas and very prosperous New Year.

Andrea, I realized by the end of January that my goals were going to get washed away with what was actually happening. It was all good, but not what I planned.

Thank you so much, Sybil,. Be blessed in the New Year.

What are the elephants goals? They are tenacious creatures that won't allow any nibbling. That is a good thing. Our paths change with every turn. Looking for solutions along the way can bring some great results that are not just the answer for you, but for that elephant.

I try to set my goals based upon what is known and actually attainable.  As Lenn Harley points out, with the economy and market being what is is currently, that's like trying to hit a quickly moving target.  Just hard to be a good shot these days ...

Janis, that's a good point. Our market does change constantly and that's the point. How does each market set its course for each year.

Gene, I'm afraid you and Lenn are too right. 8=)

My goal has always been just one more closing than the year before.  It's worked out just fine.  Simple yet efficient.  After August 1 that goal will be 10 more closings than before

Mike, when I first started I had production goals but, now to be honest I don't. I set goals for reaching out to new people and keeping in touch with my sphere by doing new things. Streamlining processes are a goal as well. For me it's just added stress to set production goals and by setting the others my business has grown each year from the production side. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas. I hope you get some time to relax.
