After The Shower Pan Demo, This Was

Discovered in Sacramento

I get calls for dry rot and water damage repairs at various stages. Sometimes, I get to be a part of the whole process and other times I get to do a part of the restoration of the damaged property in Sacramento. It is all good and appreciated.

When looking at the rebuilding of some water damage in Sacramento, I came across this hole with plastic over it. Since I was not involved with the demolition I have no idea what the reason for the hole was. I had asked the owners about the hole and they stated that the hole was in the sub-flooring and not a part of the water damage demolition. The plastic was likely added by the demo team.

So the question is, why is the hole in the floor?

At this point, I do not have an answer for you but I do know the hole is not necessary and will be repaired if I were to get this job. This lack of support for the shower can be troublesome, and such a large opening can also introduce animals into the home.

Hi Tom, so why is the hole in the floor with plastic covering it? I looked at the photo still puzzled. Not knowing what happened beneath the flooring for drain work it looks like we will be waiting for an update.

Because someone cut the hole?

Yes, that was smartassed.

That is larger than the hole typically provided for drainage, so it was purposefully cut.  To remove rot?

That is certainly a far bigger hole than needed for a waste pipe. Maybe someone wanted quick access to the crawl space

Hi Tom,

It's amazing what you find during your inspections...I'm wondering the same as Jay Markanich  was this hole cut out to remove rot!
