I see a lot of wordpress blog websites. Some people think this is all you need to create a website.
I am not going to argue that. If they are built right they can function like a website just fine. They
can also rank well too if you got your plug ins installed correctly. But have you seen the look of
these things? They are pretty ugly, some of them, and they don’t get very artistic. The good news
is that you can have a wordpress software system living inside of your website and it will function
just the same.
The benefit here is that now your website can look like whatever you want it to. This can be a
huge artistic endeavor and it can be really quite beautiful. The wordpress component will now live
inside your site and function like a blog and act like an engine and drive links and traffic to your
site. To me this is the best set up and it takes extra steps to make it possible. But if this is done
correctly then you have a powerful system that is going to maintain high Google rankings.
There Are TWO WORDPRESS – Make Sure You Understand This
There are two different types of Wordpress applications. One is a blog that you can sign up with
for FREE. There is a downside here though and that is you cannot do extensive self promotion
on it. I try to tell this to cheapskate lawyers and dentists and they never listen. The Wordpress
company will actually put a freeze on your account and will not let you publish on it. All of your rankings will disappear too so don’t be a greedy pig.
The second type of Wordpress is the safest and that comes in the form of software. Your hosting
company should be able to provide you with access and allow you to install it in your blogs. This gets
installed through your C-Panel in your hosting account. You don’t need to be a programmer to do it.
The upside here is that once you install this into your website the Wordpress company doesn’t scrutinize you over how you use it. You can do 100% self promotion on here and that is a great relief to
some of you. Forget about looking over your shoulder every time you do a post. There are no restrictions on how often you can talk about yourself while using the software version of Wordpress.
Google loves Wordpress and it is probably the best type of blogging software out there but don’t get
too cozy with it. Remember that Google also likes its own Blogger blog sites which aren’t too bad
either. There are a lot of things you can do with both platforms and it is good to have a fair mix of
these in your online campaign. Don’t be afraid to cross link them either so you can send crawler bots
to your posts. Make sure you link these back to whatever site you want to boost and promote. This is
a complex balance of cross linking and back linking. Your SEO expert will know how to best promote
these web properties
There is another area you will want to take notice of when it comes to Wordpress and that comes
in the form of plug ins. These are little bundles of code that perform certain tasks. Some of them
will help you do things like keep track of who comes to your site. Some will help you with Wordpress
Google analytics, some will block spam comments, others will help your SEO. You have to know
what ones you want and how you want to protect your website. There are thousands of plug ins to
choose from and not all of them are winners. I have a select few that I use on all of my sites and I
am always testing out new ones. The Wordpress audience is an active one so you can always
expect new templates and themes every week. You will also find new templates and upgrades on
your existing plug ins.
The one thing that bothers me the most about the Wordpress is the overall klunkiness of the software.
You cannot get real articulate with a lot of the layouts. It can be very frustrating. This is not
like an original web site layout where you can change things and manipulate the page to death.
There are a lot of limitations and if you want your Wordpress component to look like your actual
website you are out of luck. Now there are templates that you can purchase that look pretty good
and will add some level of sophistication.
What will happen is your Wordpress posts will pop up on Google as separate web pages. They
will in fact pop up along side of your main web site landing pages. You will in a sense be in direct
competition with yourself and that is going to help you earn multiple spots on page one. A lot of
advertising agencies fail to do this because this takes time and you have to have patience and
know what to look for. You also have to have a sense of what your competitors are trying to do.
This is not an overnight sensation but it’s not exactly slow either. Some of the posts we create will
pop up on page one in about 2 – 3 days.
