History of a Painting - "Armuchee House",

Armuchee, Georgia.

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©

While exhibiting at a show in Cave Springs, Georgia, a couple talked to me about painting a picture of their home.  We made an appointment with them to see the home and take some pictures.  Their home was located north of Rome, Georgia outside of Armuchee, GA.

While being taken on a tour of the home, they brought out a photograph of what the home looked like before it was remodeled.  It was black and white photo of the house back in the early 1900's.  Since I was interested in nostalgic places, I mentioned that I would like to paint a second picture of what it used to look like.  The didn't mind, but they were not interested in purchasing it when it was finished.

This is what the finished painting looked like before it was remodeled.  The painting was sold almost immediately.  Actually, it was still on my easel not quite done when someone told me they wanted to buy it when it was finished. You'll notice the date on the painting , 1985 shows that it was painted 30 years ago.

You have captured the true feel of an old Southern home in Rome, Georgia outside of Armuchee, GA.  Both my parents had paintings of their family home places done.  Priceless.

What a wonderful story of a great southern home! My grandparents had a painting of their living room which I have now and I treasure - some of the knick knacks on the coffee table in the painting are now in my living room on my coffee table - it is a nice conversation starter.

You are a very talented man!  It is a beautiful painting, thank you for sharing the story.  I too have a painting of my grandmother's house hanging in my real estate office and as Lisa said, it's definitely a treausure.

Must be that second smaller house so common in rural settings was on the other side of the house?

Hi Larry, great painting. You definitely don't see a clothes line much anymore. Brings back memories when I use to help my mom wash clothes and hang them outside on the clothes line to dry.

I adore this painting, Larry, but have glanced through some of the others, I can see I would be broke quickly if you live nearby.  This is outstanding....you are so talented in so many ways!

Larry this is another painting I would gladly have on a wall in my house.

I have been to Rome, GA many times, my in-laws live about 25 miles from there in Summerville, GA.

That is a neat picture, Larry. You even captured the laundry that would more than likely be hanging out on a nice warm day. You really have a great eye.

Thirty years ago?  Oh my or my, it seems like just a couple of years ago, not 30! I remember Al Wallace coming over and saying I will take it!  He owns several of your paintings.  Can you remember all of them?
