Passion and Real Estate

Last week, I read a post by Lyn Sims  I thought would surely receive a gold star Are you Enthusiastic?  In her post, she described a listing appointment with a less than realistic seller.  Lyn’s post happened to coincide with a recent office meeting where we discussed the concept of passion in real estate.

As I was reading the post -- ideas kept popping in my head.  One was the subject of enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm -- some people are naturally enthusiastic.  Everything is wonderful. They wax poetic.   Figuratively and I think some may actually do it literally.  Some enthusiasm seems quite real to me.  Other times it seems forced or fake.   But I’m not here to judge...really, I’m not.

I don’t think I’m particularly an over-the-top enthusiastic person.  Some may say I’m reserved.  I prefer to think I’m genuine. Suffice it to say, I’m not into rah-rah cheerleading.

In real estate, I really can find the “good” in any property -- it may take some digging but I can always find something that I feel is a positive attribute(often lots more).   But I can’t fake fawn over a feature that is just fine, okay or good but really kinda meh. I don't feel I need to rave over a property to make my point. I do let potential sellers know I want to represent them and would be proud to do so - that's honest and that's genuine. I thank prospective buyers and sellers for contacting me and I do appreciate it. Sincerely. Genuinely.

Enthusiasm needs to be real in my opinion.

So does passion.

And I think there is a difference between the two.  At least in my mind.

I think I’m quite passionate about real estate.   I like nothing more to “do right” for a client - I’m pretty sure we all have that as a goal. I am knowledgeable about my area and the real estate profession.  I work diligently.  I work smart.   I stay on top of my business.  I keep aware and keep learning.  That is my passion.   I may not shout about it.  But it’s there.   Hopefully, it is evident in the results.

So I strongly suggest you read Lyn’s post.  Tell me your thoughts about passion and about enthusiasm.  And if you have a question about real estate in Pasadena, West San Gabriel Valley or NorthEast Los Angeles(NELA) contact me at 818.516.4393 direct.   Let’s discuss what’s important to you whether you are a prospective buyer, a homeowner thinking of selling or just curious about local real estate.

I'm enthusiastic by nature, which can be a turn off as evidenced by the comments. At times I have to turn it down, or else people think I'm on drugs, or phony, when really I'm enthused in the moment -- and it's genuine. I agree, though, enthusiasm and passion are not quite the same. There can be a stillness to passion that is not expressed in words or outward expressions, but in actions.

Marte Cliff - if my best choice for good pizza was 40 miles away, I think I would have to take a class, get a pizza oven and the proper equipment.  That's a bit too far to travel for me to satisfy a craving like pizza.   Yum.

Pamela Seley, REALTOR® - on the contrary, at least how I'm reading into the comments and my own feelings, I appreciate true enthusiasm.  It's the "fakeness" that I find objectionable.   If someone is enthusiastic, I accept that's the way they are but I have found some people who "turn on that happy face and bubbly personality" and it's not genuine.

I also agree that passion can have a certain stillness to it and can be manifested in actions and behavior.

Some people confuse me as enthusiastic when I'm really just overly obnoxious.

Thanks for bringing Lyn's post to my attention. I somehow missed it. I think I'm very passionate about real estate. And there are probably some areas that I'm more enthusiastic about listing. However, I don't think it's a necessary component to selling a home. I know my area well. I keep track of the market. I present an excellent marketing plan and help the sellers get the most bang for their buck through the use of professional photography and home staging. Hopefully, they'll see that I'm there to get their home sold quickly for top dollar but that ultimately depends upon whether they take the advice I give them regarding price and preparation. If they can be enthusiastic about getting their home ready to sell, I can stir up some enthusiasm to sell it.

I don't have anything to add because you already nailed it.

Back to the important topic of Pizza for a moment - Basic criteria for where I live: the town must have: take out Chinese, solid burger joint, hole in the wall Mexican, and a great PIZZA place!
