Presto Magic!  We Have Grass Man!

Many of you know that I have been busy coordinating the replacement of our backyard grass.  Our backyard is pretty small and the existing grass was just getting ruined by our two golden retrievers, Rocky and Maverick.  We explored the artificial turf option which came in extremely high in price.  I wasn’t sure how “The Boys” would take to the artificial turf after reading many reviews.  So instead we went au natural and got new sod.

The ‘Sod Guys’ came out yesterday and ripped up the old brown stuff, mixed in some magic dirt and rolled out a nice new green carpet (sod).  The only problem is that ‘The Boys’ can’t romp and enjoy the new stuff for 3 weeks.  We worked hard installing a temporary mesh fence around the yard yesterday.

 new grass

When we brought ‘The Boys’ home from their day at Come Sit Stay Pet Resort, they were none too pleased.  They ran outside and barked at the fencing material.  We walked them back to their designated poddy spot and they were having nothing to do with it.  We put their leashes on and took them for a short walk, but no dice.  Their world had been turned upside down and they were not happy.

Finally at 10:30, I had enough.  They wouldn’t do their business so I put them in kennels and went to bed.  When I released them from their min-jails this morning, they ran outside and did their thing.  If you gotta go, you gotta go!  Finally!!!!

They will be going back to Day Camp again today and every day this week.  In the meantime, I will work on sprucing up their poddy area.

Good morning, Belinda --- old habits die slowly.  Hopefully they will adapt soon to their new environment.

Hi Belinda - Given our experience with our labs - and goldens are just labs with pretty hair - I think I'm going to start a couple of betting pools - over/under for how long before the guys go through that plastic fence, and over/under on how close to that three weeks you come before you give up :)

The new grass looks great, I hope that the "boys" don't tear it up when they are finally allowed to play on it.

That yard really looks nice! I was wondering how the potty thing was going to work on artificial grass. How on earth would you clean that? I guess I am a dummy when it come to turf grass.

Belinda,

I have seen artificial potty grass (big enough for potty duty that is sold for those in apartments).  It is washable and perhaps they will accept the alternative...A

The gtass looks great!  A

Really interesting Belinda. I have been following your Sod Scene since you started writing about it and really enjoy the series.

Hi Belinda - I just reseeded my back yard for my Sheltie, Shadow. Fortunately we have a 10-acre city park right across the street for walks and 'business' while the new grass grows in.

We have a sodded yard as well, so I know, Belinda, what happens when dogs need to be restricted when we resod.

We busted our butts today to get everything ready for the dogs' Men's Room.  Moved lots of rock and took out 4 bushes and installed a 6 x 8 section of fake grass.  Hopefully they give it the Paws Up when they come home tonight.  Whew!

Rocky and Maverick will soon adjust to your new scheme of things in the back yard. In the meantime, you will benefit from the exercise during the extra long walks.

While I have seen some amazing results with artificial turf, I still hang onto my au natural grass, even though we are in drought here in California.  Perhaps, if the drought continues another year or so, I will rethink that, and put in native plants or something of that nature.

They are creatures of habit just like humans.  They will adjust over time. I saw your post on FB ... the small patch of artificial grass you are installing for them.  Too funny!

Belinda, hopefully, your "boys" will get used to their new area soon.  I'm pondering the same question as Sussie above.

We can relate because we don't like our world turned upside down too. Are they doing okay with their doggy daycare outings?

Good morning Belinda,

I think the "boys" will give you a run for your money! Old habits die slowly and these two are not about to bend to what you want..at least not for a while!
