I am really slow these days- before I could really figure out who and why should be using it - Edgeio closed the door.  Yes, I syndicated my listings to edgeio, but couldn't understand why anyone would go there to look for real estate listings. Here is an announcement from their website (http://www.edgeio.com):

February 2, 2008

edgeio assets sold to Looksmart and Vast.com

edgeio’s assets were sold in December 2007, partly to Looksmart (the live service; the patents; the code; the trademarks) and partly to Vast.com (the real-estate related services).

Please direct all inquiries to one of those companies.

This blog will remain in existence as a historical record of edgeio.

edgeio was an audacious effort to build a fully distributed classified advertising platform for the Internet. It allowed any web site to post classifieds whilst having them syndicated, through edgeio, to any other web site. Aggregation and Distribution are going to be key to may new applications which seek to provide the glue between publishers and readers. edgeio can serve as a model for developers and product designers who seek to build on its legacy.

So, I looked for more informattion to understand what really happened.  Here are some links:

I never heard of that site, but great info to tell people who use it and do not yet know about what is going on with it.

It was a great idea - but maybe web standards are doing away with the need for something like that.  If you've ever seen www.postlets.com it is a tool that allows individuals to create one ad that posts to many websites.  Who wants to run around to all the different classified sites and create the same ad more than once?  I use postlets for my real estate postings and it makes things easier!  Now, my web host is starting to do it for me automatically so I don't have to bother!

This was a site that several of my sites I post to would syndicate to (such as postlets and maybe point2 nls)

Ryan, Bo and Julie - thanks for your replies and clarification. What I was confused about the fact that they tried to do everything.  Thus- no one really felt that it  was "their" site.  I was not aware that they were doing syndication.

That's a trip. Thank you for sharing! I wondered about the kinds of sites. I post everything on Postlet.com and I've checked out a few of the others that get syndicated. Interesting...

Hi Karin,

I had a pleasure of meeting a former CEO of Edgeio, Keith Teare and we talked about what Edgeio was supposed to be and what it was not supposed to be. I found out that that it really didn't have that much to do with real estate at all. The purpose was "de-portalization of Internet revenues" (click here for explanation: http://blog.edgeio.com/?p=57 ). The use for syndication was really an after thought.

I strongly encourage you to check the following links to Keith Teare's bio.  He is an absolutely fascinating personality - a professional entrepreneur for over 20 years with absolutely great accomplishments:

He is currently a co-founder and President of another startup - Fotonauts.  He is closed lipped about what Fotonauts will be about.  They do development in France.
