When I think of viral videos 'Keyboard Cat' is the first that comes to mind. The adorable ear bug is now 8 years old and has been viewed 40,488,472 times. Have you ever thought about how many times that singular video has been emailed, texted, shared, facebooked, tweeted, pinned? And that every person who has ever shared it is linked to that video...forever. It's innocent enough; I doubt anyone will loose their promotion over a keyboard playing cat, but the danger of sharing is now a reality. Everyday you are leaving a social media footprint. Every tweet, every Facebook share, every blog on activerain, every comment, or email is blasted through the fibers of the world wide web and can be retrieved at any time: great for police scouring through emails to convict a criminal, bad for the daiquiri loving post-collegiate applicant.
What if you are like me and think "I am careful about what I post! I have nothing to worry about! It couldn't possibly effect my business"? I stumbled upon a video on Inc. Video that recently grabbed my attention and made me think! In the clip, business savvy Shark Tank staple Mark Cuban weighed in about his fears regarding his social media footprint, how it can effect our businesses and what he believes is the solution.
His company is now developing software that virtually eliminates your social media footprint. He claims that this technology will keep your social media presence clean so that private entities can't link you to content. With companies like Google analyzing every search you make and Amazon's anticipatory shipping (you read that right...they ship you stuff before you buy it) it was only a matter of time before someone developed a way to reverse that process. Firefox has also jumped on the bandwagon-of-privacy by releasing a series of commercials that mock Google's nosey ways! They are creepy and oh-so-true!
It's amazing how we've come full circle in the world of social media: from being hesitant to share in the infantile stages of myspace, to sharing everything on Facebook and now wanting to erase everything we've ever shared! We are seeing more and more repercussions for those who are quick to click. Mark Cuban suggest that we get the ball rolling by going back and erasing anything older than 6 months old. Is it overkill? Do you have anything to hide? Even seemingly innocent posts may hold more power over your business than you think! Click the link below to watch the video and see Mr. Cuban explain just how what we are doing now can effect our future!
