The Benefit of Good Camera Lenses for Photography

I have written about this topic before and thought I might do so again to encourage those hobbyist types that really want to take it to the next level in photography.

I noticed that in many trades that the quality and variety of tools seemed to have a direct relationship to the quality of the job performed. Cabinet makers, tile setters, painters, you name it, the correlation seems to fit. The more artistry involved, the more the right tools seem to be critical.

In photography, it is no less important to be able to control the outcome of your efforts. I hear it said by so many that their smart phone takes satisfactory photos or their Instamatic does just fine. And yes, they do just fine. Unless you want something different than the majority of photos you see out there.

For me, photography is a hobby ( since I don't sell what I produce). But that doesn't lessen the quality of my desired outcome. In the photo below, this was taken with one of my larger lenses and it provided details that I had never seen before. Let's face it, when planes are flying, you are not that close, hopefully, otherwise you might get an unwanted haircut.

The more you see details as a photographer, the more details you want. Anything less and it would be inevitable disappointment.

One of the tools that make my work stand out is the collection of lens that I have and being able to select the right lens to assure a satisfactory result. This photo of a coast gaurd Helicopter flying out over the ocean was taken with a 400mm lens on a tripod.

At that distance any shake or vibration will affect the sharpness of the photo. Granted this one is not perfection but I can read the numbers and see the small detail. When I take photos of animals I want that same clarity but in that case, I would likely use an 85 mm prime lens or if close, a 50 mm prime lens. ( prime lens is one that doesn't adjust focal length or telescope).

For all of us enthusiasts, it is understandable that when we are in a photography store, we get a buzz of excitement seeing all the new things that can improve on our best efforts. Check out the lenses and see if there isn't another one that will help create yet another wonderful and memorable photo.

This is valubale information for those who take photography more seriously, even when it isn't their profession.  It would be a shame to take a top of the line camera, and then snap on an inferior lens, or other equipment!

CONGRATULATIONS on having this blog FEATURED in the PHOTOS group!

Hi William - Great photo. I agree about the cell phones - while they capture a lot of data, the lens quality isn't capable of the level of detail that a good add-on lens on a good camera will deliver. The difference is notable.

If your eyes are the window to the world wouldnt that be equivalent to the lens being the window for your camera?

Hi David Shamansky , I would say that it is a good analogy.

Hi Sharon Lee ,

You are so sweet and have always been so supportive. It has always been my desire to be the best I can be , especially with something I enjoy so much. I have the same feeling about my career and the relationships and results have always rewarded me in more ways than just financially.

Hi Dick Greenberg , I was reading today that there are efforts underway to add many more features to cell phone cameras to give better options for much better photos. It is hard to imagine that they can squeeze the full size DSLR functionality into the light weight phone. But then who would have guessed that there can be multiple terabyte hard drives into a small laptop.

Hello William ... great capture and you are so right!

Even with the 8 different lens I have for my 35mm cameras, I have been thinking of purchasing a (new) one for my trip to Alaska
