As I have been reflecting on the tragic scene in Charleston, SC, I have been so encouraged by watching how those who were closest to the incident are handling this. We are not seeing looting, anger or violence but rather we have been witnessing the most gracious and beautiful acts of forgiveness. After an unimaginable and horrific event, the church and it's members are teaching the entire world the beautiful lesson of forgiveness.
Yesterday the church opened it's doors to hundreds of people desiring to overcome the evil by being present in the sanctuary where just days before they witnessed an unspeakable mass killing. A place where we typically feel safe and secure was suddenly thrust into chaos, bloodshed and fear. I cannot even imagine the scene.
Yet through the veil of evil, goodness prevails. As a Christian, this is the only thing that makes any sense at all. Through the pain of the hatred, these fellow Christian's in South Carolina are providing us with a beautiful reminder of the healing of forgiveness.
Forgiveness is indeed a beautiful act to behold. Whom do you need to forgive today? Why not tell them. Perhaps the person that you need to forgive is yourself.
I am thankful that the people of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church are leading the nation in this lesson of forgiveness. May we all remember them in our prayers. May we all turn to the healing of forgiveness now and always!
