Feng Shui Journal from a Decorator’s Point Of View Part One: “The Love Stones”

I am not here to challenge the ancient art of Feng Shui; Believe me, I am merely attempting to correct my Chi without compromising my decorating sense and I am inviting you along on a journey that I have never taken before. This is my journal…

As I am opening my first Feng Shui book, looking for some guidelines I could apply from this mysterious art in my own home, I quickly realized that if I did what was asked of me, my home would look like a Chinese restaurant! I hit my brakes of course and pondered confidently as I would any decorating challenge; How on heaven and earth am I going to use chimes and crystals and mirrors and love the results, oh my?

Feng Shui is a serious business and I respect that, but what it tells me to do just “tickles” my funny bone.

Chinese Buffet vs. Ritz Carlton!

Question to the Ba-gua – how do I use Feng Shui to turn up the thermostat in my bedroom?

Answer from the Ba-gua - you can find your Love in the South West Sector of your home.

Problem - My home faces north and according to the Ba-gua this puts the southwestern love and sex sector right smack dab in the middle of my kitchen table.  What? That’s interesting!  “What is my family going to think?” My next thought was “Ah that's why they love my cooking…it’s sexy!”

Feng Shui tells me that I may have some problems if my kitchen is in the southwest sector of my home…ya think? My goal is to work on my bedroom first so to make a long story longer, I will leave this path of aligning my kitchen’s Chi and find out what to do with my bedroom…

Feng Shui Solution: I now head to the information regarding the South East Sector of the Ba-gua where my bedroom lies and what do I find in that sector?

  • Money
  • Great people
  • Having it all

Who knew? Maybe some red velvet draperies with fringed lamp shades, dim lighting, soft music, and my money issues will be solved!

With that not an option (although it does explain a lot) I need to continue the search for the answer to my initial quest.

Ah, here is something…crystals can cure anything that ails you no matter where your bedroom is. Feng Shui says “love and relationships are ruled by earth so if I toss some precious stones in the southeastern corner of my southeastern bedroom then they will raise my vibration”. (Footnote: you can also wear stones on you to dispel any problems you are having in your relationships. Are you supposed to throw them I wonder?) I am reading along and now I see the stones have different purposes. I can’t believe what I am reading! I just have to list them here for you because you won’t believe it either! (I apologize to all Feng Shui Practitioners but it is funny)

  • Sapphire – helps you resist violence and lust, hmmm.
  • Yellow Topaz – helps you release drunken or abusive partners, hmmm, whose left?
  • Rose Quartz – promotes a sense of self-appreciation and self love, improves your mood and enhances your feelings of joy. Hmmm, what are they trying to tell me?
  • Diamond – helps you perceive beyond surface appearance and understand the truth about another person. (Where are they going with all of this?)
  • Emerald – helps you learn lessons so you don’t repeat mistakes in your love life.
  • Ruby – helps to dispel feelings of discouragement and self-doubt. This is the stone to wear if you are drowning in self-pity. (things aren’t exactly looking up)
  • Amethyst – helps you let go of past hurts and relationships (will it make him leave?)

You know, I am just going to have to trust that this will all lead to Great Love in the bedroom so I am going to go for it. Since I do not have gemstones laying around that I can gather up and throw into the love corner (my housekeeper would think I was off my rocker) the decorator in me is going to figure out how to take a vase and create a mosaic masterpiece out of the alternative faux stones (semi-precious) like; agate, aquamarine, carnelian, garnet, lapis, jade, moonstone, onyx, opal, pearl, quartz, and crystals…all of which I have in my jewelry box and my little girls toy box.

The excitement is building and I am ready for the challenge. I am taking my first real step to decorate with Feng Shui! (This could take years at this pace) I’m off to make my love pot.

Next day: Voila! I came up with a Feng Shui concept that I can live with...I love it.

Lucky Bamboo     Feng Shui Stones

I used several stones on the list and placed them in a glass vase and until I read further, I threw in some luck with a Lucky Bamboo plant and a ceramic blue fish. You won’t see this in a Chinese restaurant!

So the final analysis here is: If your bedroom is anywhere besides the southwest sectors of your house (per compass) then try doing something like this in your southeast corner of your bedroom. It is too soon to tell if this is really going to work and I am sure it is going to take much more effort than some rocks in a vase but it's a good start.

Part 2 will address what to do when other rooms are located in the Love sector of the house and the next step on what I can do next to attract love and romance in a bedroom located in the darn money sector.

I have written about Feng Shui before in one of my newsletters if you are interested in how to upgrade some other suggestions I found interesting.

Footnote: You may not think that this post has anything to do with real estate but in fact, it really does. If employing Feng Shui principles to create a more desired lifestyle where I am living now does not work, I will be looking for a really good real estate agent!

Sheron, you need to be careful how you take care of those stones.  Typically they don't like living in water.  They absorb their energy from the air around them, then dispense said energy to whomever or whatever needs it.  Once a month they should be cleansed in salt water and put in a sunny place to dry and re-energize.

See! It just keeps getting better and better. I had to plant my lucky bamboo plant in some dirt so the stones are clean and happy but not energized so thank you for that tip. I will place them in some sea salt and water right now. The REAL SALT WATER will have to be added a little later but I will be sure to bring some home. Thank you old wise one. (not the old part)

No reason to use real salt water, regular sea salt and water will do just fine.  Just keep them in the open air.  And don't forget to let the sun work its magic tomorrow.

Sheron - Ok a little help please... I have noticed that if I see a set of steak knives  knives in the SW corner of the kitchen that usually a couple that owns the home is getting a divorce or having trouble communicating. I actually had one customer move them and they decided to get back together and not list the house. So yes my new rule should be to never tell them to move them until I have the home listed :=). Then let the home stager or Feng Shui master tell them right? But I do wonder could buyers also not buy a house for the same reason? Yes could this be a two edged sword?

Also perhap an evil idea, but should we all go out and give steak knive sets to our buyers as closing gifts in the hopes of repeat business?

Sheron;

I am still fairly new to the active rain community, but it didn't take me long to realize, a post by you is a post worth reading.  You are hysterical!  As to the feng shui stuff...I too recently started to apply feng shui to my living spaces.  I attempted to do this some time ago, but got way too confused.  I found some simple to read books and soon learned the difference between those items that are Chinese tradition and those things which are the true use of feng shui as related to energy ( good and bad ).  I went about applying these things in my office first.  Immediately it seemed to me that things had gone from bad to worse and I thought oh great....I am feng shui dyslexic.  I took all of the maps and obviously read them and applied them backwards!!!  But then out of no where business took an amazing turn.  In fact, my business and income have started to grow in ways that I was not expecting and I literally feel overwhelmed by it all.  I can truly say I have observed amazing changes personally and professionally.  Now...is it solely the feng shui or is it my belief that it's the feng shui?  I have a saying...it doesn't matter which came first the chicken or the egg...fry them both and call me down for dinner.  I am continuing to incorporate more feng shui in the rooms of my home.  If for no other reason...they feel good.  The other thing is I have had no problem in getting my husband to buy in to all of this.  It once and for all solved the toilet lid debate.  I explained that it was bad chi for him to leave the seat up...so after just a few gentle reminders of " you are messing with my chi"...the toilet seats remain in a "closed and locked position" when not in use.

In all seriousness I am very interested in the practices and principles of the art of feng shui and am looking forward to the fact that this month I will have two feng shui experts on the radio show.  I will have Suzee Miller on the air with me November 16th and Stephanie McWilliams of the new HGTV show, "Fun Shui" is joining me November 30th.  I believe both women will be wonderful interviews and will offer valuable, easy to apply techniques that we can all use.  I hope you will listen in and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the valuable resources you provide including the great gift of laughter!

Hello Ray - your ponderings are really funny but also real. I don't have your answer but you could ask Carole our feng shui guide. I know sharp knives are a no no as well as sharp pointed plants. Funny stuff though...I like the idea of us fs as a premeditation tool...

Gina - we need to get the word out about you! Do you have an email reminder service? You are doing a great job even if you are a feng shui dyslexic and the toilet seat? Too kewl!

Hi Sheron;

Thank you in turn for the kind comments...I hadn't thought about an email reminder...will need to look in to that.  I really am blessed to have such wonderful guests who will come on the show and they really are a wealth of knowledge.  Will have to look in to a newletter service for reminders.  I again just loved your feng shui stories...I find so many of your blogs not only inspiring but fun and together that's a lethal combination!!!  I'll keep enjoying....

Cheers!

Hi Sheron,

Thanks I'm contacting Carole about it. Maybe she can add some sharp wisdom to my pondering. I know you get my point. This could be the cutting edge of Feng Shui ideas. There is a book out there on Feng Shui, can't remember the title, that talks about that premeditation tool stuff. Oh yeah ever see Ba-Gua mirror wars, one business starts by putting up a small mirror on top of their door and the business across the street see it and does the same? Both trying to send the negative energy to the other. It turns into a Feng Shui arms race. It's like Pokemon see I think Peka-chu peka-chu could totally take the beckoning cat beckoning-cat in a fair fight.

Ray, Thank you for your contact.  Anything sharp or "pointy" including sharp points on furniture are considered in Feng Shui as "Cutting Chi" or "Pointed Arrows"  --  we have names for everything.  The appearance of sharp knives are considered detrimental in Feng Shui for the reason you mentioned and many more.  As for selling, if you want to have the sale you do not have to advise your clients to put them away but when having prospective buyers see it they should be out of sight.

And because I don't want to take over Sheron's wonderful blog, I'll do a post on it to explain it more completely.  Thanks, Sher!!

Thanks Sheron!!! I had a similar experience. My Love center is my office. So I noticed I photo that my husband loves that his X took. So when I see the photo I see him looking at her. All he see is an awesome photo him and his Dog -Pike. So I compromised. I found I charm online. I will try to add it to this post and then I set rose quartz and a crystal in front of it. Every time he dusts he tries to put those things down and away and I have to dig them up and put them back. He must think I'm crazy...but he loves me ;).Charm

Hi Debbie - that is a beautiful charm/pattern. Does it cover the picture? Am I reading you right? Sounds like you two are spending too much energy on this picture. Can you put it in another room...like the garage? Just kidding. I would definitely get it out of the wealth area. At least there wont be any dust under it. Sounds like you have a wonderful relationship.

I love your story. I too have been learning about Feng Shui and trying to incorporate some of the practices in my home. Lucky for me my office is in the money corner and my bedroom is in the SouthWest.

The difficult thing I find is that the more you read, the more confusing it can get. There are so many different schools of Feng Shui with conflicting advice.

The best piece of advice I have had regarding Feng Shui, is to concentrate on ONE area of your life to improve and do what you can. Just remember that if you don't like the way it looks, then you shouldn't have it in your house. It all has to do with symbolism and also helps us to stay focused on our goals. something that you grumble at with disdain every day when you walk by does not create positive energy.

Books by Lillian Too are pretty good and easy to digest.

Good luck with your Feng Shui adventure......and I will continue on mine.

Katherine - you are right...concentrating on one aspect of my life has been very helpful not only in getting the results but actually recognizing them, noticing the improvement. Happy Chi to you too and do share when you can.
