A Website for Houston Foodaholics: B-4-U-Eat

Sometimes you make a connection with somebody, and you may not quite be sure why. Other times you know very well why the connection was made. A helping hand for a person who is new to your community may be all that it takes.

Last year, I was contacted by a Realtor who had just moved to Houston. She was looking for an inspector, and she stumbled upon me. To be honest, I probably was given the job because my price was right, and nothing else. Like many inspectors, I have a little packet, which I give to my clients at the end of an inspection. It is a getting to know your neighborhood type of thing. I list various bits of useful information. Among this material is one simple little web address that made all of the difference in the world. It made my connection to this young woman.

Having come from California, she was not familiar with the greater Houston area. She had settled in the city of Humble (north of Houston), but she was showing a home in Deer Park (southeast of Houston). She was looking for her own connection with her client, and she found it through me: taking her client to a good local restaurant. She accomplished this by going to a website that I always recommend:

This is a site where regular people write reviews of the different locales around our community. Houston is a dining town. We are just behind New York when it comes to the number of times per year we go out to a meal, and in the number of eating establishments. Knowing the experience of others is a great way to sift through these places to find the one where you want to eat.

Anyone can write a review (they even let me write one, so that shows you that anyone is welcomed). There are a few rules. Criticism needs to be constructive. They do not allow rants. They allow for differing opinions, so they do not want you to be disrepectful to other reviewers either.

By the next house that I was inspecting for her, she was a pro. She knew the neighborhood, and she could impress her client by taking them to the best place to eat. I do not know if other cities have such a site (and I never have checked if this site has expanded its coverage), but we in Houston, who are in love with food, have a place to seek out that favorite eatery of a neighborhood, or to discuss our own dining experiences.

My clients, who know of this site, have said that they know that I am a foodie, when they saw that I listed this site. As an inspector who travels all over the greater area here, I need a way to find the best meal out.

Frank... I love the name of the site...easy to remember.

We have several sites like that for this area. In Concord they have a contest every year for Best Italian, Best Pizza, Best Breakfast.....you get the idea. That is really good info to have on hand!

Joan, that is always good to know. I wanted to do this post for the new group here on AR dedicated to food. The idea is to post items that would be good Localism posts too. Since I think this site is good for people to get to find out about their neighborhood, I thought it would be a good site to share. You should join the group too; I know that you would have some good posts to share about your area. It is called Active Rain Foodaholics. Have a good night!

Frank I love it.  I lived in H Town for 5 years.  It was known as the fatest city in America.  I miss the restaurants, the Astros's (Killer B's), and the women.  :)

What a great find, Frank.  We have a few similar sites, but nowhere near as in depth as I'd like it to be.  I hope my restaurant blogs for Gainesville will change that though!  I have several places in mind that I'd like to profile and can't wait to do so!

Ron- we probably still have that reputation. No on really walks, it seems. Everyone just hops in the car. :)

Angela- I think that this site is a great model for other industries too. The way the reviews are handled is fantastic. Many people will be quite honest by saying this is why I liked the restaurant, and if you are not into this, it may not be for you.We have many foodie blogs in Houston, but this site really covers a lot of places.

To anyone reading this post, let me make an introduction: Angela is the founder of the new Active Rain Foodaholics group. Please come on over to check it out!

Frank, This is great that you where able to help!  Love the website idea. As far as your service price.. I must say I have done the same thing here, Looking for the inspector with the best rates. At the same time and inspector that makes the customer feel comfortable can way on the price issue.

My first home sell, I called around and found the best price, I happened to be at the home when the inspector showed up. I introduced myself "he swiftly said hello" and continued to walk through the home in ten minutes. He left without saying goodbye to me or the sellers. ???  Needless to say I use someone now who came into our office to introduce himself and pass out his cards to the Realtors in our office.

Christina- I am not the cheapest in town, but I am priced competitively. I work hard to be of use to my clients and associates in the industry. I freely let mortgage brokers and Realtors use my material, even if they do not use my service. It eventually pays off. As for your first inspector, I have met a few like that. I see sellers as potential clients, so I like to talk to them about what I do, and if you want the job again, manners are always needed. I do not understand why people do not get that fact.

Fletcher

They don't publish all the negative reviews of the "profiled" restaurants. Not very ethical.

Fletcher, thanks for dropping by. I admit they did not publish one of my reviews because they found it too critical of the service of this one place. I loved the food, but the service was awful (considering that we were the only non-orientals in the place, and my family and I were being ignored, I felt it bordered on rascism, which as it turns out has been a complaint of others of this locale).

Still, I do like the site as a reference, and I have read some negative reviews or at least reviews which make me avoid a restaraunt.
