Dreaming on this Memorial Day Weekend 2016

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

It's hard to believe it's May 2016 already. Memorial Day is tomorrow, but today we'll be hosting a picnic at our Multi-gen home for family and friends who didn't go camping on this busy three-day weekend. We hope most people will take a moment to remember the "why" of this important holiday.

It's a bittersweet time of the year as we honor our late nephew, Gene Mills, who died, at the age of 21, in Afghanistan on June 22, 2012. It's still hard to fathom.  His younger brother, Jake, who followed in his footsteps, is also a proud Marine. He's at Camp Lejeune right now.

We have yet another Marine nephew who just returned from South Korea to his base in Honolulu. It's comforting to know he too, is safe this weekend. We are proud of these young men, but often dream of a world where our military is no longer needed. We can all dream, can't we?

I was so sad to hear about your nephew Eugene C. Mills III. We know there's always the risk but we never think it will happen to one of our own. I hope you don't mind, I found the obituary to read what was written and it touched my soul, "It was his family who made him the man he was." I think, as family members, that's all we can do, do the best we can, teaching our children, nephews, grandchildren, etc., that common courtesy is so important. He was raised right, obviously he lived up to becoming a fine role model, son, nephew, and friend to his community and an excellent soldier too. I know that hole is big and there are no words of sorrow that can make things right; yet I would like to believe he's watching over his brothers in military, soaring overhead, protecting them in battle. May God bless all of you.
