Peter Buck was born in South Portland, Maine back in 1930. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine earning a master’s and doctoral degree in physics at Columbia University.
He was working as a nuclear physicist for several companies from 1957 to 1978. He loaned a family friend $1,000.00 in 1965. He told the friend to open up a sandwich shop to help him pay for college at the University of Bridgeport. The friend took him up and named the restaurant after Peter. The two formed Doctor’s Associates to oversee operations of the franchise.
The first two restaurants were not financial successful however they continued to expand their operations. By 1973 they had 16 locations throughout Connecticut. In 1974 they began franchising out the restaurants. Maybe you don’t recognize the name but surely you’ve heard of the restaurant which started out as “Pete’s Super Submarines” to the name change of “Subway Sandwiches”. His family friend was Fred De Luca. Peter as of this writing is alive and well living Danbury Connecticut. At last count his net worth is 2.6 billion. Just another reason to be focused and persistent in obtaining your goals. Never give up, never give in until you’re belly up in the ground.
