Red asparagus beans growing in Haiku Maui HI

I'm showing off my red asparagus beans we've grown in Haiku Maui. They're also known as "yard long beans" but I have never been able to get one quite that long!  The pods usually grow as pairs, with the occasional set of three beans pods.  I like to let a few of the pods go all the way to maturity so I can have some seeds for the next crop. Otherwise, you pick them before they get too fat.

Asparagus beans can also be green, but it's kind of fun to have the red ones because they really stand out on the vines, and they look good cooked too.  They keep their color after cooking, unlike some other varieties of purple beans.  Cook like any other pole been or bush bean.

These beans are so easy to grow... just poke half a dozen in the ground and put 3 bamboo poles in a tripod around them and let them climb up.  Soon you'll have loads of beans and they keep on producing if you keep picking them.  If you like gardening and growing your own food, you'll love these easy and productive beans.  They take up very little space and you can always have some on hand.

Georgie,

They are beautiful.  I have seen them at our Farmers Market, however I did not know that they were called aspargus beans.  I like that.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel Jeff Dowler Next time you see them you'll have to try them.  I think they keep better than the regular beans, if you need to store them.

Endre Barath, Jr. I suppose it's because they are so long and skinny.  As for the color, just a variety that is interesting and more colorful... like purple cabbage or red okra.  They still taste like beans though.

Robert Vegas Bob Swetz I'm surprised that you have not seen these in Asia - very popular here with the Filipinos.
