Friday Fotos: Gargoyle Condo

This is another Paris photo.  It's a gargoyle condominium, also known as Notre Dame Cathedral.

These creatures spend their days in their units multitasking.

Their first job is to ward off evil spirits, a task at which they are very experienced.

Their second job is a little more practical. Gargoyles are an important part of the Cathedral's water management system, carrying rainwater away from the walls and into the building's gutters.

As a lot of you already know, I love Paris and head over every chance I get.  And on each trip, I pick up at least one tidbit about one of the iconic buildings or monuments that I think of as old friends.

Nick and Trudy, I didn't realize they had a practical purpose until a couple of years ago when I read an article about them.

Will, I love the old buildings.  I want to live in one with a viw of the Seine!

Michael, there are two gargoyle shops at the National Cathedral and another in Old Town Alexandria.  They are purely decorative, unless you count their work of warding off evil spirits and burglars.

Sandy and Norm, both of you must take after the other side of the family!

Rebecca, there are some cool old buildings here in DC and also some in New York that I really love. But you're right - there is nothing like most of what's in Paris.

Dick, I think gargoyles were pretty big in Paris for a long time.  I'll have to sift through some of my photos to find other examples.  I think there are just a whole lot of them at Notre Dame.

Karen, I took this one with a long lens from the street.  I wish I'd had a tripod, though.  It was hard to stay steady.

Bob, my last trip, I actually went to a Sunday Mass.  That was pretty cool!  I love the place - also Sacre Couer.

Pat, walked past this building, and missed this detail, how silly!    Love Paris too!

Tammy, they are good on the outside when your gutters need a little help.

James, might I suggest that you set a trip across the pond as a reward for a great year?

Until recently, I was unaware that the gargoyles served to direct water away from the buildings on which they stand guard!  Love the photo too, Patricia Kennedy!
