Community- Guidelines RESPECT

By
Industry Observer

Thanks to Lynn Friedman and the February Challenge to jumpstart our blogging. I read the Active Rain Community Guidelines. After reading them over and mulling about them what really stood out to me was the  word RESPECT. We seem to be lacking that as an overall society.

A perfect example was a friend of mine told her son who was 4 at the time to call me Yolanda not Mrs. Crew or Miss Yolanda. I was stunned. I did not like it. It was the 1st time I had had this situation. I thought why did it bother me? It then came to me, it was the lack of respect. This is a little thing but that is how respecting our elders start. Though I was 30 at the time it did not matter. I was his elder.

When this situation occurred again I did correct the name. It is not something I did not pratice with my own children. When Bob came into our lives, my children have a great dad, so they could not call him dad and they were to young to call him Bob so they called him Mr.Bob, now they call him Mr. B for short.

If we here at Active Rain can respect each other and respect our audience and the public, then we start by teaching others respect; by doing this we are teaching others respect because it all starts with our examples.

I sometimes think our world would not be in such as state if we all simply respected each other, but respect is a 2 way street.

Yolanda, respect is a two way street, and I agree that it's important for kids to learn to respect their elders.  I love that your kids called Bob Mr. Bob!

Hi Yolanda

Respect is something that is learned, and is often reciprocated. It's an important part of the AR Guidelines and for the most part people ARE respectful here. Reminders never hurt1

Have a great weekend!

Jeff

My son when he was young called his dad by his first name (John), and me by my first name (Myrl).  To this day, he doesn't call me Mom, but calls me Sierra Madre instead. . .Go figure!  To my grandkids, I'm Nana or Nanatee.  Nanatee comes from the fact that when we swim together, I float on my back alot.  They say I look like a Nanatee.

Yolanda, excellent post and it is all about respect. These days respect as sort of lost favor. I am happy AR still makes this an integral  part of its culture.

AMEN, YOlanda. Respect has been lost and I find that respect is or should be taught at home.

Respect does go both ways, and I taught my daughter that from the beginning of her life. Great post.

Say hi to Mr. B. for me. I could resist. LOL.

Good morning Mrs. Gilbert.    Respect is something we should all practice and hopefully it will be reciprocated.

Respect is fundamental in getting along well with others, there are so many fights that begin merely because someone did not feel respected.

Hi Yolanda - great post about respect and why it matters. I love the handle, "Mr. B" that your kids have given Bob.

Very well said Yolanda Cordova-Gilbert - the respect is something that one should learn at a young age itself.

So true - Respect is a two-way street.

Let me add that please and thank you are a very basic form of respect that needs to be a constant as well. How hard is that to do?

Good morning, Yolanda... our society would totally crumble without some modicum of respect. And that being said, I feel as if we see less and less of it all the time. But respect needs to be inculcated in the home.

Hi Yolanda, sometimes I wonder if some people truly understand the meaning of respect and the fact it's a two way street. Just imagine how different our world would be if we all practiced this simple word.
