Is customer service dead or a thing of the past?

I recently had an appointment with a service technician on a Saturday between 8 am and 2 pm. I asked if he could give me a shorter window and he said he could not.  The technician called on Friday and confirmed the appointment for the next day.

On Saturday after having waited for five hours, I called and left a message on his voice mail.  During the afternoon four different representatives from the home warranty company called and left messages with him also.  He never responded to any of the voice messages.

Walt and I waited a total of nine hours for him to show up to no avail.

When I spoke to a representative from the company about it a couple of weeks later, she said that the technician reported that he had come to the house a little late and no one was home so he left.  There was no card left, no phone message and no evidence that he had been to our house.

I was discussing this with my husband's son-in-law and he told me that he believes customer service is becoming a thing of the past.  I really hate to think that this is true.

What is your opinion, is customer service dead or a thing of the past?

Marte, that is obviously an example of someone not even thinking. I mean how can you be in two places at once?

Unfortunately, for many, customer service means as long as it fits their business process and themselves is what they call client service - all too common.

A little bit like calling for service and they put you on hold for the longest period of time - I call it customer ignorance.

Richard Bazinet /MBA, CRS, ABR, that's a good term, I think a more appropriate term would be "customer neglect".

Sybil,

Increasing numbers of our population have become so consumed with their own personal concerns, their whole being supersedes the considerations, interactions and necessities delivered to others.

Stand at the entrance to a retail outlet and observe the lack of courtesy shown, elderly people, the disabled, women, mother's with small children, etc.. We are rapidly becoming a nation fixated on self-indulgence......to heck with anyone else!

I recently had a closing delayed because the mortgage lender had assumed that someone else in his office would send the necessary documentation to our attorney at the appropriate time. He never bothered to follow through with his responsibility, knowing fulwell,  he wouldn't be in his office to  forward these matieals in a timely manner.

Apparently, his personal business was more important than seeing to it the performance of his rosponsibiities was assigned to another mortgage broker for follow through.

On rare occasions, an individual will provide exceptional customer service. It is so infrequent, most of us marvel at this expression of consideration and courtesy.

Let's make a commitment to not follow the crowd but in fact, provide exceptional customer service to each and every individual we come in contact with. A smile and the extension of commom courtesy go a long way toward delivering more than what is expected!

Sharon

It is not a thing of the past, but unfortunately exemplary service is hard to find. It's an opportunity for others to excel and succeed if they can give the exemplary service and have loyal clients for life while others lack it and fail.  -Kasey

I believe you are right and it is somewhat a thing of the past. We own a Property Management company and get to deal with Home Warranty companies often and run into long wait times. Upsets tenants greatly. Bummer is that we have no control.

Very sad when this type of thing happens. We all suffer a tarnished image when cusotmer service in any one industry fails.  I believe people are surprised when they get great customer serice, this industry included!

I think it's probalby always been this way but it's more noticeable in our current society with high demands. The fact is, most service people are in the top 10% if they would just respond to phone calls or emails within 24 hours.

It's sad to hear when there is such slow response. In my business that's a sure way to lose an account. Thanks!
