LET'S GET REAL - DO YOU KNOW YOU NEED TO CHANGE?

Almost always it comes down to leadership and communication!
Right on target - and - re-blog!
Do you really expect ME to change? Get real.
Kathleen Daniels has asked to share a pet peeve relating something with our business. In my case it is clear. My pet peeve is a business owner who admits he or she had a problem and needs my help but wants me to find the guilty and root them out.
Let's face it. Change is difficult and when working with teams of people we usually go through several stages before we get to real collaboration. Those four steps are forming, storming, norming, and finally PERFORMING.
Fortunately, this does not happen often because I try to set the stage before working with a client.
Here is the scenario:
Mr. or Ms. Business owner has a problem such as declining sales, lost customers, or people not performing as ownership sees necessary. They agree to engage my services to do an evaluation of the alignment of people with the organization and organizational goals. I explain the procedure and tell them that they may find some roadblocks and obstacles they did not know existed.
We then put the staff and management through an online survey along with personal interviews with key staff members. For some reason they expect me to come back and report to them that, "this person must go" and "this person must be disciplined" and "this person needs to be retrained."
When I come back with the report to leadership and tell them things like some people are not sure what the mission is, or that they have not been given clear understanding of the goals and priorities, the procedures make it hard to get things done. Unfortunately, when some people hear this they become defensive and angry.
"Well, I am the boss. They need to do what I need to have them do."
So at this point I feel like saying like Jack Nicholson, "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!"
Thank you Kathleen Daniels for this fun contest.
