Being A Proactive Listener Will Enable You

“A proactive listen will gather far more useful information

and will be able to use it effectively . . . . then a

proactive taker.”

Lou Ludwig Sales and Management Consultant,

Success Coach, Speaker, Trainer and Author

As I see it . . . . . . . .

Being a proactive listener will enable you

The foundation of asking the right questions comes with the process of proactive listening . . . . and applying the 80–20 rule of effective communication. That rule is composed of listening 80% of the time to understand the other person that’s speaking . . . . and asking the right questions 20% of the time to gather more information.

Being a proactive listener puts you in the position of having a better understanding and the knowledge about the other person . . . . and or their situation.  You will also know what’s most important to them . . . .  and their wants and needs.

Being a proactive listener will enable you . . . . to ask the right questions in order to help the other person reach their objective. Also asking the right questions helps us to get the right answers.

Lou Ludwig I've heard this over and over, but putting into practice is another story.  I guess I just need to keep practicing.

HI Lou,

Part of pro-active listening is providing a "listening check".  You make a statement such as but not only - What you are saying is..... If I hear you correctly... etc. It gives the other person a chance to clarify if you are not on the same track!

I can't tell you how many times that I've heard other Realtors not let their clients speak. They keep interrupting and never really "hear" what their client is saying...

I agree with you and unfortunately in many cases, the speaker likes to hear their voice for extraordinary periods of time and will 'lose' those proactive listeners. There must be a balance and when the message has been conveyed, ask for questions.

Hi Lou

Listening is such a key skill in our business, or really any business as well as in life. Thanks for the reminder about how essential it is and the benefits of listening well.
