Tips On Moving With Pets
After weeks of searching, you’ve found your dream home and reality sink in. YOU ARE MOVING! Moving is not an easy task, especially when you have pets. Some do just fine with car rides and adapt to new places quickly, others..not so much.
I’ve recently moved from a large home with acreage to a smaller home that’s on a half acre lot. My first priority was to have a game plan for Buddy as he does not like car rides nor does he feel comfortable in strange places. So I called our trusted Vet Dr. Joel Sheehan to our home three weeks prior to our move. She prescribed some medicine to calm him down which was to be given before any of the action began. There was one problem...Buddy does not get into cars. So just imagine how nervous I was just thinking about THE DAY! Those who know me know that I don’t like prescribed drugs, oils are the way to go for me. So I began with Lavender Oil to calm Buddy down every day as he could see I was packing and things started to move from our home one by one as I gave away most of my “stuff” and the rest new buyers purchased.
I would try every day to get him in the car to no avail. Once I got his room ready in my new home, it was time for business with Buddy Boy. I first put him in his very large crate thinking we could just put the crate into my SUV with the help of my neighbor and his friend but the crate was too big to fit in so we raised him up and open the crate door so he could get in the truck which he did. I had his collar and tags on just in case. His room was ready at the new home with his toys, food, bed..everything he was familiar with. Buddy was safely in his new home!
Whether you are moving a mile away or a thousands of miles, you must have a game plan if your move involves pets. Here are some must do’s when moving with pets;
-Be sure to have updated tags on their collars and collars around their necks. If you are nervous about the collar not being on your pet at all times, explore the option of microchipping weeks if not months prior to your move. I prefer to have a harness myself.
-Try to transport your pets prior to you and your family and the movers. Having stuff they’re familiar with such as their beds, toys, food and water bowls are helpful. This may not always be possible if you’re moving across state but do the best you can, at least arrive at the home prior to your furniture.
-If you are moving to another state and actually driving, be sure to have everything your pet might need in your vehicle such as their food, water, toys, bed. Take breaks in safe places and always have their collar or harness on.
-Be sure to put your pet in a safe place with no possible exit on the moving day. Remember, they’re not familiar with the area and the last thing you want is for them to dash out the door.
-If you are moving to a new area, do your research and find a Vet prior to your move.
