We have Entered "the Giving Season".....

By
Real Estate Agent with EXP Realty 414-525-0563 57026-90 Broker

We believe in giving back....whether that means in time, money, knowledge, resources, if we are fortunate enough to have something to share with someone...that is what we do. We don't limit it to November/December....and remember that there are children that don't get school lunches in the Summer....that no homeowner ever planned a natural Giverdisaster, that disease doesn't just happen to other people. There are people you know who would welcome a phone call, a visit, a meal...a sharing, caring gesture and we feel it is important to BE that person....and so appreciate when kindnesses have been shown to us.

For years, on AR at this time of year I have considered writing this post...and then did not.  Everyone does with information what they will....and I am but the messenger. There are some more "seasonal" appeals with goals set by area for raising money for causes....you may have some Messengerlocally...and we all know the ones that are national that have become familiar on street corners, in the mail, etc.  Sometimes we take for granted that because we see some of the "good" that an organization is well managed, that our donation will be well spent....and people truly in need will get the help they need.

Your office has always sponsored this...helped with that...it has to be a good thing...and here it comes...Or not....there are charities that spend money in ways that would suprise you....and for us that means no money, time, energy is sent in their direction.

We learned quite by accident that a number of homes are owned by a charity well known to us all as part of their "perks package" to employees.  We certainly don't dictate what any company/charity gives as a perk...but we do decide Homethat if our donation houses $400,000 + homes for employees, we are reconsidering our gifting.  That charity can be found here.  Further, that same organization dictates who employees may marry, and if they are not within the organization,  it can be cause for dismissal.   It happened in our community a number of years ago and was shocking to many people who were otherwise contributors.

There are other organizations of "national reknown" that would surprise you as well...donated dollars are not always the priority for the people intended to receive them in many organizations.

This "Giving Season".....we encourage you to give..whether it is food for local pantry, clothing for the winter...or if it is money...and your time and energy....be careful....very careful....and don't "assume" the good...research it first.

Excellent point. It's so important to make sure our charitable donations are truly benefiting someone and not lining an organizations pockets. D

Good afternoon Sally and David - everyone must research a charity before giving or your good intentions may be doing the opposite.

This is indeed the giving season, Sally, although I like to try and give all year long... I'll definitely be giving this month to my two favorite causes--my pet shelter and food pantries.

Sally and David- more people are researching which organizations that they give their donations to. What a shame that this has to be done. But I too don't want any donations I make to go to the hierarchy.

Dear Sally & David,

I like to plan my giving for the whole year & spread it out, so it is not a lump this time of year.

Sally there is a website which rates how much money actually goes to a a charity, before I give, I always check it out, because it is shocking how many love their own pockets and live quiet well on the generosity if kind and giving people, Endre

As a rule, I prefer to keep my donations local, Sally K. & David L. Hanson ... even if it's a local chapter of a more nationwide charity/organization.  I want "bang for my buck" ... so as you suggest, prior to giving we check to see how any charity is rated.  We can't assume that the proper thing is being done with funds received ...

Your message is perfectly timed,

Gene

Sally & David, thanks for a timely reminder about our time of giving.

Giving is a very good thing to do. Giving to people who have need is a fulfilling action to take.

Your warning is well noted. There are several charities that do not steward well the monies given to them. I choose not to enable them in their actions.

Thank you so much for your post.

Thank you for your post, Sally and David. There are many ways to give and share all year round but one has to be smart about it...who wants to fund administration primarily with little going to those in need, or an organization whose philosophy you disagree with.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I agree; we all need to research those we give to, just to make sure our money/time/gifts are going where we think they are.

Good morning Sally and David, it's important for us to know where our dollars are going before we give. Aside from South Lake Animal League, I like to help locally, there are plenty of senior centers, homeless children etc that need our help. Thank you for sharing about this organization, I had no idea.

It's sad that we have to think like this, but yes corruptin and fraud take place in the name of "non profits". Here are a few sites where you can check out a charity to see how it rates in terms of actually spending money on their causes:

https://www.charitynavigator.org/

https://www.charitywatch.org/

After we do our homework, we do our best to make the right decisions in giving. And in the wise words of my wife, "we are called to give... if the recipient misuses the money, we still did the right thing, and they have to live with the consequences of their actions and the karma that will follow."

This is great advice. Charity is an investment in someone else's future in some way, shape, or form. It is prudent to make sure that that investment is reaching its intended recipient. Thanks for sharing.
