YOU CAN'T HAVE ACCOUNTABLE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT OWNERS

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Real estate agents who have a serious are achievers.  Achievers are always accountable for results.  If you are an achiever you know that.  Congratulations!

However, if you want to build a team of achievers then you need to read on.  Creating a culture of accountability requires collaboration, communication of goals, and understanding the nature of motivation.

Having conversations about accountability should be combined with empowering your team to take ownership of their work.  You need to communicate the goals and the desired outcomes, but they need to be a part of it.  Be totally transparent regarding challenges and obstacles.  Your team should not fear making mistakes but should learn from them.  Honest and direct conversations need to occur if you expect the right outcome.  When a team member is part of those conversations collaboration will occur.

How is this important to the success of your team?  Consider what happens if you have a member who needs to speak up and offer opinions but fears doing so?  You cannot have accountability, I believe, without empowering people to take ownership.

The book, “Crucial Confrontations”, by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzer really talks about this topic.  How do we handle missed commitments, failed promises, and bad behavior regarding our staff, our boss, our spouse, our children, or any other relationship?

The way I see it the decision to hold an accountability conversation is like a successful goal setting process. Such as.. Why do you want to do it and what are the benefits?  What will be the consequences of not doing it?  What obstacles might you encounter in striving to achieve it?  Then how will you communicate when a promise has not been fulfilled or where the disappointment occurred.  The book points out a terrible incident where lack of confrontation to the boss resulted in tragedy.

Do you remember the Challenger disaster in 1986 when 7 American astronauts were lost in the Florida sky?  Investigators later determined that the 0 rings failure had been responsible for the explosion.  It was later learned that several months before the disaster, some NASA scientists were concerned that the 0 rings might malfunction in colder weather.  But they never confronted the chain of command at NASA.  The culture at NASA was such that those who brought up obstacles might not have continued career success.  NASA’a lack of encouraging ownership and accountability resulted in a real tragedy.  Have you ever seen this happen in any company where your worked or in your own business?

Do you really want to be frustrated over missed commitments, broken promises, or bad behavior?  If not, I suggest that you understand your people along with knowing and communicating the team vision and values.  When an issue arises, frame the real issue.  For example, if the problem is consistent lateness with projects don’t frame it as lateness.  Instead, frame it as continued broken promises and reliability.  If you need to inform your boss about an important failure you see in the organization do so in the same manner.  Learn to have frank and honest conversations about accountability.  Above all be accountable to yourself and your values.

There seems to be a severe lack of accountability in our society these days, Grant Schneider ... both from the side of those unwilling to step up and admit their errors ... and those unwilling to highlight and hold those committing the errors accountable.  Not sure if you remember the TV show "Happy Days" ... but Fonzie had a real problem saying the word "Wrong".  The whole nation is that way now.  That needs to change on a corporate and individual and personal level.  Your post helps and gives us a roadmap to kickstart the change ...

Hi Grant! I agree, if you don't hold your team accountable, the doors to collaboration will never open. Wonderful post and I have now added another book to my 'must-read' list (“Crucial Confrontations”).

I hope you and yours have the Happiest of New Years!

Happy New Year from Charlotte NC

Hi Grant Schneider, this is a great message for all of us. Sometimes, workers don't want to be accountable and reap the benefits anyway. There must be consequences and it starts at the top.

Good morning Grant Schneider ,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured this in her "Ah-Ha" moments for the week. I'm not sure how I missed this one. I agree with Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi "There seems to be a severe lack of accountability in our society these days.Your post helps and gives us a road map to kick start the change!" Everyone wants to reap the benefits without accountability. You cannot have accountability, without empowering people to take ownership.

I see a lot of people who do not want any accountability and thus refuse to be in a position of receiving empowerment.

You have shared some valuable advice.

Beth - it is a sad commentary the people don't see the connection between benefits and accountability.

Kathy Streib - oh thank to so much for this highlight.

Dorie - you are so right about this lack of accountability.

Sheila - everyone have skin in the game.

Hi Grant

There are some pretty powerful messages here about being accountable. Seems that some people simply don't want to be held accountable and prefer to blame others.

That NASA story is so sad, but no doubt a situation that has been repeated in other ways in other companies with unfortunate results.

Jeff

People these days tend to dislike confrontation, and so there is very little accountability. Learning how to confront these situations is very important. Thank you for sharing!
