We truly love this business....and often, it emotional....anyone that says that we "just buy and sell properties" is missing the best part of what we do...the very human element that changes lives forever. The stories are many...the tears ....buckets.....and the heartfelt gratitude from Buyers and Sellers...more than any commission check in rewarding us for doing what we think we do best.
We often get referrals from other agents....and this call came from the other side of the country saying that a family member was in hospice and the home needed to be sold. The agent had read about us on line and said "I know you would treat this transaction the way I would, and that is why I chose you. " My lip quivers and we thank her for her kind words and gratefully accept the referral.
We were introduced to other members of the family...none living in the area of the house and as we toured it, we were asked to tell the personal representatives what we believed should be done to get the highest and best offer. We produced a list of suggestions and contractors from painters to carpeting, some bathroom updates from new vanity and flooring to stripping wallpaper and replacing it with soft gray paint.
The kitchen cabinets were painted with new hardware...new countertops and sink/faucet and new lighting.
The whole house was painted inside and the outside touched up as necessary from the gareage door to the trim.
The personal representatives left some of the furniture for staging as we directed ....and a few carloads later we had finished staging with window treatments, bedspreads, tablecloths....flower arrangements....we know that the Sister who had lived there would have loved how it turned out...and we did too. A deep cleaning....and the first open house....well attended and multiple offers before sunset. It certainly was not the most expensive house we ever sold....but we were determined to make it look like a million dollars! The family was thrilled with the transformation and the offers that would now allow money for the Sister's children.
We arranged to have the Personal Representatives pre-sign in the city they lived in so they did not have to travel back to the area of the house to attend the closing. They sung our praises to the closing agent who repeated them to us..the honor was all ours....as were the tears that came easily when there was as happily an ever after as there possible could be for the whole family who worked hardto honor their sister's memory.
This has been a reflective and respectful post written as a demonstration of one of the reasons we love what we do....and the people and communities we are honored to serve in southeastern Wisconsin. Sally K. & David L. Hanson, Broker Associates, Keller Williams Realty.
