Did you know there's an easy way to clean tile floors without chemicals?

Sometimes, I feel like I'm so clueless on things.  I guess no one ever taught me...or it never occurred to me.

A few days ago, I wrote an article about the best steam mop for tile floors.  In the process, I did some research on the benefits of using a steam mop and discovered that when you use a steam mop, you don't need any cleaning products...and hence no harsh chemicals.  You see, the hot temperature from the steam kills the germs.

It logically makes sense, and I don't know why I never thought about it before.  After all, I love science.  Maybe part of it is that we don't have much tile here (I have a tiny galley kitchen and 2 tiny bathrooms.  Or maybe part of it is that I used to work for P&G and had an internship years ago at Reckitt & Coleman (now renamed), the makers of Lysol.  Or maybe it's because I focus so much on hardwood floors (by the way, don't use steam cleaners on hardwood floors).

So, I just never thought about it.   And, my mom never told me about it (maybe she doesn't know?).  So, that was my new piece of learning over the weekend.  I'll have to tell my mom.  But, honestly, I don't think she'll care right now...they haven't had power since Friday night.  So, hoping they get power by tonight (and hoping tonight's snow storm won't be bad).  I think I'll tell her next week.

Good afternoon Debbie - a steam mop.  That is interesting. I have actually never seen one.

I had a steam mop & it was amazing. It worked on all my floors but I got concerned about using it on my woodfloors due to the moisture. Sadly (or not) we use a cleaning service due to time constraints.

Hi Debbie- If I recall, I got one many years ago because of one of our dogs!  I wanted to make sure that the floors were really clean and sanitized but hesitated using a lot of chemicals. We gave it away when we moved into a home with almost all wood floors.

Debe - Right...don't use it on your hardwood floors!

Kathy - So glad you have hardwood, especially given that you live in Florida.

Grant - They seem to be less common here.  I've seen a few customers with them, but I didn't really think about it until this weekend.

Elizabeth - I'll have to check her reblog.  Thx for the heads up.

Will - Thx

Kristin - Smart

Nina - Glad I'm not the only one.  It does sound like it's less common in areas that have lots of hardwood.

Barbara - Thank you so much, and thx for reblogging.  I really appreciate that.

My first steamer said it was ok for wood floors so I did use it on them. Never saw any damage from it. When I sold the house the floors were still great.

However, my current home had horrible wood floors when we moved in and it wasn't until I had a flooring company come in for some advice that I found out I shouldn't be using a steamer on wood. Turns out they weren't even close to quality floors and we ended up replacing them with hardwood. No more steamer for me, except on my tile.

Sharon - Right.  I would not use them on hardwood (and I just wrote a quick blog post on that on a different site).  I would expect they would be even worse on engineered wood floors.

I've been using a steam mop for many years. No sticky residue. Love it.

Great idea. I'm going to check out getting a steam mop for our bathrooms. Hope the storms aren't creating more problems for you, or your family.

Hi Debbie

It's not something I have really thought about it...along with many others. Great tip.

I hope all is well in your area...the weather continues to sound dreadful, with another possible storm on the way. Be Safe!!

I never knew of this either. We only have tile in the kitchen, but it would certainly help there!

I wish I had known sooner.  I don't think many people use these in NY...for the very reason you gave.

Most homes in our area have a very large area of tile from the front door, down a hallway and into the large kitchens. We hire a company called Clean by Steam and it works every time. Glad you shared this today as most people don't know you can clean the floors this way and the bonus is no chemicals. So important to so many people today.

Michelle - Oh yes, that works too.  I guess a lot of people in Northeast don't know about this as we don't have much tile.  I wish I had known sooner.

All - Thankfully today's storm isn't so bad and it's above freezing so everything on the streets has been melting.  I don't think people lost power and as of yesterday, almost everyone in the county had power.  Maybe just a few stragglers (<2000 people).  I hope they got it back before the storm.

I have a steam mop also and use it for my white tiles in the kitchen. I love no chemicals options.
