Who knew that grocery shopping could be so entertaining on a Sunday morning in Northfield?
I did a quick run to the Mariano’s on Willow Road in Northfield to fetch a few things. About halfway through shopping, a hearty music started playing - it was a German band in costume singing Octoberfest tunes.
I’ve always felt that grocery shopping is a chore - particularly because it leads to cooking! But the music cheered us customers and made trudging down the aisles and little easier.
Octoberfest is a German festival that’s been held every October in Munich since 1810 when King Ludwig married Princess Therese. Since that early day, it’s grown to be the largest public fair in the world with approximately 6 million visitors over 16 days.
There are huge beer tents, amusement rides, and a large assortment of traditional Bavarian and German foods. And of course, music.
In 2017, 6,900,000 litres of beer were served. According to conversion tables, that equals 14,582,296 pints of beer - enough to fill 2 ¾ Olympic-sized swimming pools!
So get in the mood since October is almost over with a little snippet of traditional music:
