Things are disappearing

Growing up in a family where your grand father and father were antique dealers and you later became one as well you notice things pass in and out of fashion. Like antiques, so many times people say the purchasing of antiques is over, but one of the most loved TV shows is Antiques Roadshow. There is nothing greener than buying an antique chest of drawers, makes much more sense than something from one of the chain stores.

This last week Ed Silva was commenting on trying to find a post card. As we were clearing up our basement this past week, all the kids have finally taken most of their stuff from home.  We were going through old photos, I brought all the photos from my mothers house when she died a few years ago and they have been sitting in these boxes since then. So, I knew I have to go through them and edit them down, how many copies of one photo do you need? My plan is eventually to scan them and get rid of the originals. Trudy came across some old photos of our first grandson and wanted to put them in a small photo book for when they visit.

Well, do you know, like post cards, it is very hard to find a photo book as well. She eventually found one, I believe at Michael's. But so many places don't carry them, because, well you know everything is digital now, who prints photos up to put in a book any more. They are all on phones, on computers or simply in the cloud. My comment above about scanning our photos fits into this general idea exactly.

Think about land line phones, although the cable companies push triple bundles including a land line, most people just use their cell phones nowadays.

Last year, I had a millenial purchasing a new home. The builder had installed phone jacks, neither she nor any of her friends knew what they were for and when I told them they looked at me in a very strange way as if I came from Mars. They all use their cell phones.

In our clear out we found a bunch of vintage fountain pens we put up on eBay for sale, because again who uses a fountain pen today, so few people even write today using a keyboard for everything.

I am sure the fax will soon go the same way. What do you remember that is no longer used?

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - Family photos are treasured keepsakes. What we do with them is always a challenge. Whenever I go into an Antique store and see old photos, it makes me sad to think some of my own relatives, or even I may be there and I would never know it. I wonder who are these people with price tags and is there a market for someone to buy them?

Personally, I think digital is great but then again, how many times do I go and preview all the photos I took on my scan disc? The quality of digital keeps getting better and better. But those old vintage photos are rare and need to preserved properly. If the cloud disappears - Poof! It's gone. If you store photos on your computer or cell phone and it crashes, gets destroyed, disappears, lost, or stolen - Poof! It's gone.

What to do with old photos is a challenge for everyone. I like your blog post, very much. It does make you think.

Good morning Nick - How true this is.  I remember the photo book with the corners pasted in the edges.  And yes, what are phone jacks?  Instead we need to have USB outlets.

Several years ago I decided to make copies of a very old audio tape and for the life of me couldn't find a tape player in any store. Silly me, walking into Walmart expecting to just pick one up. LOL

Luckily we had a friend who had one and let us borrow it.

VCR's are hard to find now too, if you have any old videos you want to watch or transfer.

Maps--good old paper maps. There was a time I'd give a map to all my buyers new to the area; I came to realize that they didn't want maps, didn't know how to use them, so I stopped. GPS devices get people from A to B very efficiently, but often folks have no idea where they are in relation to other points.

PS--on occasion I've pulled out a map and almost forced my buyers to look at it, showing them the proximity to town from the various houses we toured!

Hi Nick:

This was a fun read, and it really makes you think about how so many things have changed. We have boxes of photos and photo albums and while they would be great to have stored digitally the thought of doing all that makes me cringe. But they are fun to look at when we take the time.

I laughed at the phone jack conversation - I was just looking at one in my house yesterday and wondering if I should get rid of it.

I have a "cloud" fax and even that is something I wonder if I should get rid of. I hardly ever use it, although every once in a while someone (usually a government agency) insists on its use.

I too laughed at the phone jack conversation, too funny but yet so true, when it comes to Millenials.  I showed an old house with a rotary phone and my client asked "what do they use this thing for?" Well, guess what, It's a phone!

I still have Video Tapes and my VCR in which I can plug into my first flat screen TV that still works from back in 2005. I kept that TV just for old movies and family movies that we took with the old VCR tapes in a video recorder for our family nights with the grands.  The grands get a kick out of seeing their parents little.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP photos are a hard one, as you realize when you go through them you hold onto those with people and discard those which are landscapes or city views. My computer is filled with photos, and as we discard older computers we move photos over to the newer ones. But even all those photos need cleaning up.

Thank you once again Kathy Streib for featuring me in a weekly round up, really appreciate your support.

Sheila Anderson it is amazing what is disappearing and the rate at which things are becoming obsolete.

Grant Schneider very true, although the cost of those is very high.

Sharon Tara very true, what about track eight tapes in cars...

Lottie Kendall that is what I don't like about GPS, I hold the map in my head and have a good idea where I am and how to get from one place to another, but GPS like smart phones in general are making us lazy. when was the last time you had to remember a phone number. When we were young you held lots in your head.

Photos are the big one, and yes it takes time and labeling to do it correctly so others know who everyone is Jeff Dowler, CRS

Carol Williams I'll have to take your word, I don't remember anything being 5c, although electrical junction boxes are only 27 cents at Lowes.

John Henry I can imagine an architect liking a fountain pen, and we have a friend who swears by analog records and has the most awesome hi-fi system.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 , You must be a bit younger than me. I actually remember when penny candy was really a penny. It's hard to find anything for 27¢, so yay for electrical junction boxes!  Unfortantely, I don't need any of those.  LOL

Rob D. Shepherd almost any repairmen, but it made me smile to see pager repairmen. I am in the process of trying to get my laptop repaired, but the cost of repair today often triggers purchase of a new item.

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® I think phots are the new mational geographic filling up our storage areas.

Kat Palmiotti I have a fax through docusign, but rarely use it as you say.

Graziella Bruner weshould ahve held onto a vcr player, but will probably get our tapes transferred to a disc.

Very interesting post. Got me to thinking about so many things that are no longer or seldom found.

Film cameras. I have a very nice one but finding good film is not easy. Also, getting them developed is something of a chore.
