Things are disappearing
Growing up in a family where your grand father and father were antique dealers and you later became one as well you notice things pass in and out of fashion. Like antiques, so many times people say the purchasing of antiques is over, but one of the most loved TV shows is Antiques Roadshow. There is nothing greener than buying an antique chest of drawers, makes much more sense than something from one of the chain stores.
This last week Ed Silva was commenting on trying to find a post card. As we were clearing up our basement this past week, all the kids have finally taken most of their stuff from home. We were going through old photos, I brought all the photos from my mothers house when she died a few years ago and they have been sitting in these boxes since then. So, I knew I have to go through them and edit them down, how many copies of one photo do you need? My plan is eventually to scan them and get rid of the originals. Trudy came across some old photos of our first grandson and wanted to put them in a small photo book for when they visit.
Well, do you know, like post cards, it is very hard to find a photo book as well. She eventually found one, I believe at Michael's. But so many places don't carry them, because, well you know everything is digital now, who prints photos up to put in a book any more. They are all on phones, on computers or simply in the cloud. My comment above about scanning our photos fits into this general idea exactly.
Think about land line phones, although the cable companies push triple bundles including a land line, most people just use their cell phones nowadays.
Last year, I had a millenial purchasing a new home. The builder had installed phone jacks, neither she nor any of her friends knew what they were for and when I told them they looked at me in a very strange way as if I came from Mars. They all use their cell phones.
In our clear out we found a bunch of vintage fountain pens we put up on eBay for sale, because again who uses a fountain pen today, so few people even write today using a keyboard for everything.
I am sure the fax will soon go the same way. What do you remember that is no longer used?
