Wordless Wednesday: Carlsbad Art and Antique Mall is No More

Wordless Wednesday:

Carlsbad Art and Antique Mall is No More

The sad news for many in Carlsbad is that this iconic collection of vendor booths for art, antiques, collectibles, and so much more - here for several decades - along with the Mas Fina Cantina, a yoga studio and a jewelry store, will be closing to make room for State Street Commons, a 21,000 SF upscale retail and restaurant center. I believe the mall itself is now closed (BTW these photos were taken in 2008).

As one can well imagine there is a bit of controversy over this new project that will significantly change the facade and interior of this mall, adding new faces to the growing hip and artsy North State area that seems to be constantly changing.

Stay tuned for more developments and updates as I get them.

None of us like change, we see it here along the Main Line in Berwyn where several local homeowners are opposing a development in Berwyn that will be a well designed and good addition to the community. But in a few years people will be talking about the new galleries, hopefully, and shops this development will bring to the community.

That is quite unfortunate.  Malls like that give so much culture and a special "vibe" that another upscale shopping center, full of soon to be vacant stores just cannot do.  If those shops relocate, you know it won't be the same.  New stores means higher rents, permits, etc.

I have to wonder whether yet more shopping and dining is really needed? No doibt the city stands to gain a bit in tax revenue. It's a shame to see something that has been part of the community for quite some time disappear - but there may be more to the story than I know.

Hope it all goes well Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 . There are always people opposed and others in favor of development, and as long as it's done well, adds value, isn't overcrowding or causing traffic problems, etc. then I get it.

No doubt the City and the developers feels this new retail center is a good idea for a number of reasons. I will miss the look of the Mall however.

Good evening Jeff. Sounds like the place that is closing is one I would have enjoyed.

Hi Ryan Huggins - Thousand Oaks, CA

And, yes, those are the arguments I have heard. Some have commented that it's turning our seaside Village into Orange County. Hopefully they are planning for parking as that area is getting pretty crowded.

Hi Sheila Anderson

Yes, I think you would have enjoyed exploring. It reminded me a bit of the place you described where you had your booth.

Hello again Jeff. I thought so too. I much prefer shopping in these places than working in them. So far the online thing is better.

I feel your pain Jeff. When we left Delray Beach the iPix was set to open off my favorite Atlantic Avenue and I'm sure that some of the stores have closed to make room for larger ones.

What a bummer, Jeff. I've seen my share of places like this disappear in NYC and it's always made me sad.

Hi Kathy Streib

No doubt changes like these are hard, with a number of pros and cons. And sometimes development is not done as well as it could be.

Hi Nina Hollander

No doubt revitalization and development can be a good thing, depending on the circumstances. We saw a lot in Boston in certain areas, too.

Hi James Dray

You can bet I will be keeping an eye on this. That part of the Village is really changing with new residential construction currently, and in the last 3 years.

Good morning Jeff Dowler, CRS - yes, I think we can relate to see some of our own iconic places disappear.  It can be sad but I hope there is a good outcome.

Jeff it is always sad to see something that has been part of a community for years stop to exist.  Let's hope it is a positive change.

Hi Grant Schneider

Yep, I suspect most of us have seen and experienced this. I am amazed when I think back to when we first moved here 14+ years ago and all the changes that have taken place, just on Carlsbad alone!
