People in and from the country of India celebrate Republic Day, also known as India Independence Day, on January 26.
Here is a brief history of the event.
1929 – The Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress. This was in contrast to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.
1935 – The Government of India Act of 1935 served as the governing document of India until the Constitution was formed and agreed upon.
1950 – The Constitution of India comes into effect, forming a republic. Rajendra Prasad is sworn in as its first President of India. This is the first celebration of Republic Day in India.
1965 – Hindi becomes the official language of India.
Republic Day is celebrated by Indians worldwide on January 26th, although some celebrations spill over onto other dates for convenience. Republic Day is one of only three national holidays in India.
