North Carolina Outer Banks Closed to Tourists, is Madeline Island Next?
In North Carolina, Dare County police and municipal officials have made the decision to blockade most of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The roadblock is an attempt to prevent tourists and other non-residents from bringing the coronavirus to their remote community.
The blockade began on Tuesday afternoon, the 17th of March. At this time, only permanent residents, "essential personnel" and property owners are permitted to pass beyond checkpoints set up by Dare County officials. Permits are being issued to those essential personnel and property owners.
Here in Wisconsin, one must wonder if island communities like Washington Island (in Door County) and Madeline Island (Ashland County) may follow suit by adopting similar policies. We just learned about a recently confirmed case of COVID-19 in nearby Bayfield County, Wisconsin.
