Waldorf Salad
Waldorf Salad is a classic side dish made with crisp apples, crunchy celery, walnuts, and grapes (in the Timm household we also throw in raisins).
Ingredients
½ cup Mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Lemon juice
¼ teaspoon Salt
2 crisp Apples
1 cup Celery, chopped
1 cup red grapes, halved
3/4 cup Walnuts
Lettuce (optional) for a bed to pour mixture over.
½ cup Raisins
Instructions
1) In a small bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and salt.
2) In a large bowl combine chopped apples, celery, and red grapes and raisins.
3) Pour the mayonnaise mixture over the fruit and toss together.
4) Gently fold in the walnuts.
5) Serve over a bed of lettuce.
This is one of those dishes I like to see on the table about twice a year. Not so much a holiday thing for me but more of a summer “treat”.
If you enjoy receipes you will surly enjoy Rocky Dickerson 's July challenge. Read all about it HERE.
I did a quick check to see if this salad was created by the famous hotel, The Waldorf – Astoria (1893-1929). My check did confirm it however another fun fact came up and that is that it was the first hotel to offer electricity and private bathrooms throughout. Yet another interesting fact that I learned is that the original hotel was razed in 1929 to make way for the construction of the Empire State Building.
It was really difficult to find pictures of the original Waldorf Hotel which was where the Waldorf salad was first introduced. You would think there would be thousands of selfies from people using their smart phones between 1893 - 1929.
