Energy 101!

No matter which part of the country you live, which climate zone, and how many people live in a home, everyone uses energy.

Energy sources might be different, but everyone creates a bill.  Some of those bills might be offset by renewable resources, but there’s still an electric bill to offset.

Did you know that there are 3 components of your home that use the most energy?  I bet you can guess what those are?  Let’s start there.

Please comment as to what the 3 most common “energy hogs” are today in our homes that you think use the most energy?

This is Part 3 in a series of posts about sustainability

Hi Jan:

Good question. My bet is the appliances (washer, dishwasher, stove), HVAC (although we don't need to use our AC or heat all that much here) and the water heater. We try to watch the peak times and use appliances outside those peak times when we can...tough part is the stove!! Dinner, of course, is peak energy time!

Jan, I love the A/C and Diane and I argue, never the less I need to have the house around 75 degrees above that I feel miserable, energy loss or not:)Endre

Hello Jan - energy pigs live among us and a good look in the mirror can be quite revealing at times.   There are ways each of us can improve.  And the solution can be rather simple in some cases.

I don't know the answer to this but would say... the refrigerator, the HVAC and the washer/dryer.

Jan,

All the appliances that stay plugged in are some of the hogs.  We have eliminated most of them from our counter.  Happy Tuesday.  A

You bring up a good point Jeff Dowler, CRS !  Energy hogs can vary by climate zone.  Because your temperatures are more moderate, your HVAC may not use as much (DOES NOT use as much) as mine in AZ.  Typically, the water heater and refrigerator are neck and neck though!

Understand completely Endre Barath, Jr. !  You'd be warm in my house as I seldom set it under 80.  BUT I have a 16 SEER Trane, sealed ducts, and spray foam in my attic, so it stays cool, especially with all tile flooring. There are so many variables to an energy bill, but comfort is definitely one of them!

Oh yes Michael Jacobs !  Energy is an interesting animal.  We aren't always mindful of how we use it, but appreciate that it's there.  We don't get many power outtages where I live, but I can bet those that get them are frustrated by them.

That's a very good guess Kat Palmiotti !  The water heater will win over the washer and dryer since it's on non-stop.  Unless of course you get a tankless or put a timer on it.  So many variables!

Good for you Ron and Alexandra Seigel !  The larger ones that are in use non-stop are the biggies.  But so many differences in habits, climate zone and number of occupants can make a big difference.

Of course Ed Silva .  It's good to be aware so we are mindful of how they operate and how much energy they use!  Have a great day!

I'm pretty good at saving energy with my dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.  I'm not as good with the HVAC.

Hi Jan - in our area it is certainly the AC, then next the appliances, and in the winter the heat.

Good for you Myrl Jeffcoat !  It's so important to know how the systems work so you can create ways to save energy.  Sounds like you've done that!

Rocky Dickerson you're so right!  With rates going up for electricity, it's smart to examine every aspect of how a consumer can save $!

Grant Schneider !  Very true.  Did you know that your refrigerator and water heater almost tie at 13% and 12% of your energy bill!  And of course the older they are, the more energy they use.  Thanks for commenting and have a great day!
