Adopt A Shelter Pet on April 30th And Save A Life!

“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”

- Karen Devison

April 30th (that's today) is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day and it's the purr-fect day to adopt a shelter pet in the Greater Charlotte, North Carolina  area (or anywhere else for that matter). Myself, I would argue that any day of the year is a perfect day to adopt a shelter pet. Thousands of homeless dogs and cats are housed in shelters in the Charlotte metro area and millions around the country, all hoping for a loving, fur-ever home.

"It's a small thing to help one animal, but to that one animal it's a big thing."

- Gene Baur

When You Adopt A Shelter Pet You Save A Life!

It's estimated that more than 2.5 million dogs and cats are adopted annually from shelters in the USA. Regrettably, that's still less than the some 3 million that are euthanized each year! When you adopt a shelter pet, you save a life.

Save a life and adopt a dog or cat on national adopt a shelter pet day

It's estimated that there may be as many as 70 million stray cats out there! . Here are a few more statistics:

  • 20-30% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescue organizations.

  • Five out of 10 dogs in shelters and seven out of 10 cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

“I really love pets. They’re like children. They know if you really love them or not. You can’t fool them.”

– Donna Douglas

Adopting A Pet Is Good For Your Health:

Did you know that adopting a pet is good for your health?  Pets (especially dogs) help us maintain a more active lifestyle. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pet ownership has been shown to help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness. It seems like a "no brainer" to adopt a dog or cat.

“Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet.”

- Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette.

Hi Nina,
If I ever get a pet it will be a shelter rescue. Love your passion for fur babies.

Hi Nina- were it not for our "free range" pets in our backyard, I would love to have another dog. And, if we did, I would definitely adopt!!!

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... we don't have "free range" pets in our yard... maybe that's because Bingo keeps them away! :)

Good morning Nina,

Great post! There are so many animals looking for good homes. Thank you for posting about it. My wife Tracy volunteers with a local dog rescue she’s been with them for 9 years, we had many fosters. We adopted 2 a great dog and a blind kitten who was such a unique cat unfortunately they both have passed away. We continue to foster. This year while in Palm Springs Tracy volunteered at the animal shelter walking dogs. She was so happy to find out it was a no kill shelter as she falls in love with animals very quickly.

Grant Schneider good morning, Grant... I find it very difficult to live in a house without  a breathing creature like a dog or cat (and preferably one of each). They do add personality and joy to a home.

Steve Higgins hi Steve... people like you and Tracy are heroes in my book! I have two adopted pets... a cat and a dog. Not sure I could foster. Like your wife I fall in love with them and would find it hard to let them go once they've walked through my door.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker .  I love shelter pets and the thought of saving a life. I wish my husband wasn't allergic.  If he wasn't, I would have a houseful of wonderful gifts from the local shelter.

Lynnea Miller hi Lynnea... I just don't know how I'd "live" if I were allergic to pets and couldn't have any fur babies.

Thank you Nina for your kind words! I unfortunately am the voice of reason or we would have a house full as I know Tracy would keep them all too. Our dog was a foster fail and when Tracy brought home the blind kitten our dog fell so madly in love with it (as did we) we had to keep him for the dog! Tracy cries every time one is adopted but says if she didn’t foster it wouldn’t have a chance to go to a good home. Apparently we are getting a little guy from Mexico when she gets back in 10 days.
