President Bill Clinton did a good thing when he "declared Gold Star Mother's Day to be celebrated every last Sunday of September in honor of women whose sons and daughters have pledged their lives to securing for all Americans the blessings of liberty."

This flag caught my eye yesterday afternoon out in the middle of farmland, far away from where I live, while I was driving to a Celebration of Life gathering for a dear friend, not a Gold Star Mother, but nonetheless, a reminder that life is precious.
Today is the last Sunday in September. I will spend the day in remembrance of Gold Star Mothers everywhere whose sons and/or daughters never came back home to resume family life with loved ones. And so, I reflect...
A Soldier's life is about self-sacrifice, courage, sweat and blood. Loss, as a result of death is a major life stressor. No matter where the soldier came from or whose mother's heart is broken, it is the risk one takes when they go off to war. There are many mothers who experienced loss without the support of others and were depending on their loved one to return home to help run the farm, take over the family business, or at least come back home. Declaring "Gold Star Mother's Day," was long overdue and something to think about.
Gold Star Mother's everywhere, I honor you. I am thinking of mothers everywhere. The gentle blowing of the American flag is a reminder of "the blessings of liberty," something that should never be taken for granted. A thousand thoughts go through my mind, but one thing stands out to me the most:
Life and war are intertwined. Both are marked with repetition and mourning---Patricia Feager
