Stepping Back In Limestone Time

By

Fall is a great time to step back in time for reflection on building construction. Belton is a small city in between Austin and Waco, Texas. Many buildings, including the Court House are built with Limestone. With a population of approximately less than 23,000 Belton continues to thrive. The people are proud of their history.

The historic district of Belton comprises of eight city blocks from the County Courthouse in the town’s center. The town consists mostly of 2-story brick and limestone commercial buildings constructed between 1870 and 1930. The buildings have load-bearing walls of limestone, rubble or bricks. Some have Romanesque arched windows and several of the buildings have been restored or rehabilitated. There are restaurants, an old Movie Theater used for community events, like real estate educational classes, a clothing store, and other commercial businesses. Building construction occurred during a Belton’s cotton boom between 1870 and the late 1920. After the railroad arrived in the 1880s, construction materials included cast iron columns, pressed metal cornice and ceilings, and prefabricated doors and windows.

A nice place to stay is at the Bryn Oaks Bed & Breakfast. The  owners are wonderful and their Inn is charming with that good old American hospitality by people who care.

Other examples of famous limestone construction outside of America include the Great Sphinx, the Lincoln Memorial, the Great Pyramid, New York's Empire State Building, and the Parthenon. In Texas, I recommend a trip to Belton. The people are very friendly and helpful.

During the evening of the week of October 17th, streets in Belton were quiet and peaceful. Studying history and visiting historic places, by stepping back in limestone time, I can understand why in the year 1822, Clement Clarke Moore was inspired to write his famous Christmas poem which included the line:  "Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse."

Peace Be With You

Endre Barath, Jr. - I always prefer the personal touch and avoid big hotel names. I don't know if you know this, I was at a Ramada Inn while I was pregnant with my son. The hotel caught fire and I was one of the ones taken to the hospital after being rescued by ladders. It was a terrible fire.

When I began my job in Maine and drove there from IL, I checked into B&B's with my kids. I always felt it was a safer choice and the personal touches and friendship I developed with the Innkeepers is what gave me peace of mind.

I remember realizing that the pyramids were originally made out of white limestone  andhaving my mind blown by that fact.

Laura Cerrano - Have you seen the pyramids? My daughter did several years ago and was amazed! I would enjoy seeing them in person. White limestone is an amazing phenomenon.

Hello Patricia - your post offers a chance to reflect on the importance of reflection as well as an appreciation of cities (and all kinds of places we find on the journey of life).

Michael Jacobs - drawing connections and reflections is a good mix just like cement is mixed with water, sand, and crushed rock for the making of limestone.

How interesting about Clement Clarke Moore. Did he live in Belton or was he just visiting when he wrote that poem?

Enjoy your day!

Kat Palmiotti - For me, silence is medicinal! I need it in my life and I crave it more than shopping which I don't enjoy but need to do for necessities. I avoid shopping as much as possible.

That sounds like a wonderful moment, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - there is something to be said for silence!

Kat Palmiotti - as far as I know, there is no connection between Clement Clarke Moore and Belton. I drew connection through the line in his Christmas Story poem. That thought about not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse came to mind while I was sitting on the front porch rocking chair in silence - not a car drove by, no emergency vehicles, no sounds from airplanes overhead, as I have grown accustomed to, no sirens, no people walking and/or running by, no phones ringing, and no dogs barking. Silence was beautiful!

It seems like the quality of building construction has certainly diminished over time.  I love seeing older buildings and the quality of construction that was adhered to.

Brian England - My guess is that building supplies today are all about supply and demand and cost. Older buildings that stand the test of time always intrigue me.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I am very attracted to limestone buildings too. Natural limestone buildings need maintenance but have survived more tornadoes, wind, and storms than modern newer construction with brick fascade.

I liked your comment very much!

Good morning Patricia,

I love limestone buildings and houses. When Geno and I built our home we chose limestone and I've loved it! I forget about Belton, Texas and will have to explore it some day. I just sold a wonderful home in Salado on 10 acres. My clients have been paying $3,500/month to board 2 horses and the developers and builders are buying up  stables and they felt the one they were at was about to be sold. Salado is growing by  leaps and bounds but good areas with minimum 10 acres which gives you breathing room. Its a town that is quaint too, quiet with character and charm. Thanks for the info on Belton will have to check it out!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - you made a good choice in selecting limestone for your home. I'll bet it is beautiful! Salado is a great city. Many agents in DFW brag about all that Salado has to offer. Good for you for selling a great home with 10 acres. I'm sure they and their horses are very happy!

There is something magical and peaceful in quaint and charming towns. I felt the people were down-to-earth and very, very nice.

Your blog reminded me of a quarry in Port Wing WI, where brownstone was mined and went to locations in Texas, Chicago and even Washington D.C.

Leanne Smith - Port Wing is about 2 or 2 1/2 hours from Eagle River where my sister lives. I never got as far as Port Wing but what a fascinating history that quarry offered to other states. My children, myself, and all my family (except granddaughter) were born in Chicago. The Chicago Water Tower wasn't far from where I lived and I always loved seeing that limestone structure, especially when the lights were on at night. I was always thrilled when I hiked and found limestone rocks.

I too was born in Chicago and my parents shortly moved to NW IN. My parents apartment was on Greenview near Wrigley Field. My grandparents lived in Chicago on Spaulding just south of Fullerton. I went to Riverview numerous times as well as Lincoln Park Zoo.

Leanne Smith - the house I lived in was among the first to be built after the Great Chicago Fire. My grandparents owned the two-story, four flat and I lived there from the time I was born until I got married. Several years ago the second owners (not counting my parents) purchased the building but it was an Investor who turned it into condominiums. My Aunt & Uncle had a Candy Store on Greenview but it wasn't by Wrigley Field. I lived in Logan Square after I got married on Altgeld. Riverview is where I got my broken nose from the Merry-go-Round and after that incident when I was 5, we never went back there. Lincoln Park Zoo and the 3 beaches near-by is where I spent most of my teen years when I was old enough to use the city buses. It's a small world!

Hi Patricia,
I absolutely love seeing and photographing historic buildings. The architecture is just fascinating to me, especially considering the tools they had in those days. We have amazing tools these days, and the architecture and construction don't hold a candle to the craftsmanship of those days gone by.

Oct 24, 2022 09:29 AM
Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

Carol Williams - I feel the same way. Those were the days when labor was labor, hard work, and everyone wanted to work and learn a trade. Their craftsmanship was built to last. All future generations had to do was regular maintenance. The home I was raised in and lived until the day I got married and was in the family name until my parents died has a historical marker on the building. My dad never got to see it but my mother lived there when the plaque was delivered and installed on our building.
