Ice Skating by the Sea

~ Hotel Del Coronado 2022 ~

It’s almost time for the holiday tradition, Skating by the Sea, at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. My guess is this is the only beachfront ice skating available in the San Diego area, although there are several indoor ice rinks!

Skating by the Sea starts next Thursday, November 17th and continues through January 1st 2023.

Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego CA

Imagine ice skating under a bright blue sky with palm trees waving, the sun shining, and a gorgeous beach and ocean steps away! Yes, you might need a sweater, especially with our fall and winter ocean breezes, but typically at this time of year you can expect temps in the 50s to low 60s even at the beach during the day. Evenings can be cooler, however.

And there’s no snow to worry about…just some beautiful ice! Here's a video from YouTube (not mine!).

The iconic Hotel Del Coronado is a very special place by the ocean, and has been since 1888.

The Hotel Del, as it’s commonly called, is great fun for visiting, dining, or just drinks. And it’s even better during the holidays, despite the crowds, when the property and hotel are beautifully decorated. There is plenty of shopping in the area, people-watching is fun, and you can enjoy the ice skaters!  Or join them!

There are several Hotel Del restaurants adjacent to the rink area that offer great views of the ocean and beach.

Another option? Enjoy reserved seating at the rink-side Frostbite Lounge with fire pits, comfortable seats, and beverage and food service.

Proceeds from Skating by the Sea will benefit the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation.

It's a beautiful setting any time of year, but especially fun to watch skating by the beach at holiday time!

Hi Jeff... you've written about this skating event in the past... and I'm always "fascinated" by the idea of skating in warm weather next to the ocean. The National Whitewater Center does a skating rink here in Charlotte in winter... but we, of course, do have cooler weather that tracks with ice skating.

It's certainly fun to watch, which we have done a couple of times, and enjoyable to be by the ocean under the palm trees when the temps are in the 50s and 60s.

Hi Jeff,

Hotel Del was always one of my favorite places to visit while touring around San Diego.  I love the history of that hotel.  I don't ever remember having an ice-skating rink outside.

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Yep, we enjoy visiting, especially at the holidays. We were there for our anniversary dinner back in July but will probably visit again over the holidays to watch the skating. It's a beautiful hotel with quite bit of history. I understand it's haunted...and you can take a tour.

Jeff I have never thought of ice skating at a beach in California, but I can see it being very popular.

It certainly is different (not speaking from personal experience) than in a more wintry environment! There were dozens of people skating when we last visited and watch several years ago (pre-pandemic).

Great post. The Hotel Del Coronado is an awesome place to visit. But it is kind of hard to imagine ice skating there.  : )

Thank you Michael Cole  It's a pretty cool hotel, and the skating rink while hard to imagine is impressive.

That sounds like a really fun event but cold at the same time, haha.  I have never tried to ice skate in my life.

I haven't been on ice skates since I was a teenager many years ago! I have no plans to try again. LOL.

Jeff, what fun to be skating in your weather!   Our ice skating has opened, but we could be skating in the SNOW!

Hi Joan Cox

It certainly WOULD be different. I know I would rather watch ice skating outdoors when it's 60 degrees than 25 degrees and snowing!

Hello Jeff Dowler, CRS, it would be great fun to watch the skaters. What a neat location for ice skating. I haven't skated since my son was about two years old and he's a grown man.

Sounds like me, Beth Atalay  It's fun to watch, having been a couple of times, but I have no interest in skating. I'd probably fall and injure something!
