8 Living Room Furniture Ideas for Design Inspiration

The best spaces aren't one-note; they're a little bit modern, a little bit granny-chic (or maybe mostly minimalist, a little flashy—you get the idea). This is especially true when it comes to furniture selection. The days of buying a matching set from a furniture store are long gone. It's all about curating a space that combines comfort and style, function and flair. To help you take your living room design to the next level, we've compiled a list of our favorite ideas that are sure to inspire you.

  1. Everything Is Better in Pairs

Two is always better than one when it comes to creating symmetry. For a perfectly balanced space, add a pair of side chairs (or two!) or install a set of wall lights on either end of the sofa.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid to Rearrange

If you've had your furniture in the same place since the day you moved in, it's time to change it up. To create separate seating areas, try moving the sofa to a different wall or turning it perpendicularly. It's a quick (and free) redesign!

  1. Acknowledge Slipcovers

A clean white sofa looks great in any room, but they are notorious for being difficult to keep clean. Slipcovers that are tailored and washable are a good compromise (and also, get good at spot-cleaning)

  1. Add Color With Accents

Stick to a single color palette when mixing and matching pillow patterns for a unified look. That is, toss the swirly throw pillow next to the thin-striped one as long as they are both blue.

  1. Experiment with Scale

You don't have to limit yourself to small furniture if you're working with a small space. Choose a statement piece or two, such as a sofa or sideboard, to command the room and provide more seating or storage.

  1. Go A Little Crazy

Instead of arranging your furniture around the room's perimeter, try floating furniture in the center. This trick can help create seating areas that are more conducive to the conversation while also preventing the center of the room from feeling like an empty void.

  1. Reconsider the Cocktail Table

Sure, you'll need a place to set your drink and possibly display a book or two, but you're not limited to the standard square or rectangular cocktail table. Try grouping smaller round tables together or opt for an ottoman topped with a tray for a comfortable spot to kick your feet up while also providing extra seating for a crowd.

  1. Make Your Space Function Better

A living room is more than just a place to watch TV. Make the most of your space by incorporating items that can be used in multiple ways. A cafe table and chairs can be used as a dining area, and a slim console adds an office instantly.

Creating a living room design can appear to be a difficult task, but it does not have to be! A well-designed living room should be a natural combination of style and functionality. The possibilities for living room design are endless, from a sofa that draws you in to storage that is both decorative and functional. There are numerous living room design ideas available, and knowing what you like is the first step!

Good morning Tamra. One thing my wife is not afraid of is rearranging. And, one guess who gets to assist? Enjoy your day.

Hello Tamra - rearranging can bring a different perspective.  And without the probable delay of a new furniture purchase.

I’m involved with New Construction. Many of today’s buyers do want a formal LR .

Instead they want a larger FR/ Great Room and a small Pocket Office ( usually smaller than 10x10)
