100 year old post cards to show some of Michigan's history

I  have been showing off some of the family post cards that have been in the family for over 100 years in some cases.  Most are the turn of the century.  They are very interesting to me because I had never seen them until my mother passed away.  We didn't know she had them.

The other thing that makes them interesting is have lived in the area and seen these locations from a modern day perspective.

These will send you back to era that was just as hard as today without all the handy expressway or delivery systems.  Maybe it was better?

union station

This is Reed City, Michigan the town I was born in 50 years after this photo was taken.  You can see a buckboard carriage toward the center left.  This was Union Station, everywhere had a Union station because of the Union Railroad.

Baldwin Michigan

This is Baldwin Michigan main street before all those cars putted down the streets.  This is very close to the town the movie Idlewild was made about...about 5-7 miles is my guess.

Owosso Michigan
Main St. Owosso Michigan, this photo shows the hitching posts for buggies, notice all the bikes.  This is town is located a bit Northeast of Lansing our State Capital.

LeRoy High School
LeRoy High School in LeRoy Michigan just south of Cadillac.  I never knew they had a high school.  People won't like that probably...it is now consolidated into Pine River schools.  This give you an idea of the class sizes years ago.  The other issue is not everyone finished High School their was work to be done on the farm.

I have some more post cards of other areas to publish.  Hope you enjoy the journey back in time.

My grandmother had a collection of post cards from old NY.  I have kept them and they show a lot of what life was like back in the 1920s.

Hi Ruthmarie, most people has never seen anything like these.  We all have seen news clips or TV programs but few have anything like these post cards.  If you get time they would be worth sharing.  I know one person that would like to see them!  Thanks for the comments Ruthmarie.

Hi Teri, they are glimpses of our past.  The local people that see these are very surprised at seeing some of the same buildings with a few face lifts.  Thanks for the comments Teri.

Hi Gary,

I enjoy learning about Michigan because we lived in Ann Arbor for 3 years.  In fact I'm visiting this week for Art Fair.  My daughter went to a great camp in West MI, it was so beautiful; she has very fond memories.  I'll have to find some historical photos of our area to share.  Thanks for posting these.

Gary:  What a treasure! I'm sorry about your mother but this is so wonderful that you have these postcards of hers to not only remember her by, but to remember the "good ole' days".  I enjoyed seeing them.
