Plant and garden care after a storm comes through is important for many reasons here in Wellington Florida.

wellington Florida plant care after the storm

After all the rain and wind, take a look over your yard and garden. Trim the trees and bushes that have broken limbs. Pick up all the debris in your garden areas and plant areas because with all the rain, the debris can become moldy. The mold can spread to all your plants. Take precautions now and get rid of any loose plants and branches, leaves or clippings that may have settled in the wet areas tor prevent mold.

Take a walk around your property and look for pots or any containers that may have filled up with water during the storm. Empty out any small containers of storm water anywhere in your yard and garden. These areas and containers make great breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. If you get an infestation of mosquitoes consider all natural methods of getting rid of them. Read my post here about natural remedies for mosquitoes including Garlic Oil  This was one of the first posts I wrote on Active Rain, you will see no images and no special bolding and certainly no html.

If you find any Palms that have bent over from the storm you can prop the Palms up with 2 by 4 pieces of lumber in a triangle area around the Palms.

Something I discovered the hard way is that after the storms I just assumed the plants would be alright with all the rain they get. But going unchecked, the next week the plants would look all dried out. I was so shocked because we had all this rain. What I discovered is that the plants can go from being over watered to drought looking within days after a storm. This is because the nutrients in the soil may have been washed away. You can find an organic fertilizer to use to get the nutrients back into the soil so your plants can survive and flourish.

Goodness.  I'm exhausted just thinking about the work in maintaining a lawn and landscaping.  But, if you want a nice presentation for your home. . . . . . ?

Lenn- It is the mosquito thing that keeps us on our toes. We have a landscaping company that does the rest. But any tiny puddle of water can be a breeding ground.

Garlic oil? Wouldn't that just give the mosquito bad breath? LOL. Good information, no matter where you live.

Katerina, great information. It always amazes me how tons of rain and wind can do so much damage to plants.

I wish we could get a bit of that rain. I thought my poor plants would see some yesterday. So far nothing for days. I have to water the ones on the porch every day.

What happens most often is that broken limbs are not pruned after breaking. It's just like a human with a wound. If the cut is clean it will heal much faster. The faster a wound heals the less time its exposed to fungus. You should always prune so that the water sheds so as not to get puddles in the wood.

As far as water goes the soil will only take so much water at one time. This run off is one of leading reasons for new fert regulations to help keep it out of our water ways.Even when the water is absorbed you get what we call leaching which is where the nutrients travel through the soil into the water.N and P are very mobile so to help curb the leaching you should use slow release fert. You could also use organic matter to amend the soil which helps to increase the natural biology of the soil.

Healthy landscapes can almost always sustain them selves. In the event that you need to lend a hand its best to do so proptly.
