"You are My Density...Keyword, that is!" - The SEO of Blogging (Simple, Effective, Overlooked)

The following is another article that is derived from my notes taken during Dave Taylor's session at BlogWorld 2008 entitled Ten Things You Need to Know About Search Engines & Find-ability.

"You are My Density...Keyword, that is!"

According to our trusty Wikipedia, "Keyword density is the measurement, in percentage, of the number of times a keyword or phrase appears, compared to the total number of words in a page." When you take Keyword Density to its extreme, it's called Keyword Stuffing, and it's considered an unethical SEO technique.

But the big debate, of course, is what percentage of Keyword Density is most optimum/effective? 5%, 8%, 25%?

Have you ever read something with a Keyword Density of 25%? YIKES! It may help you to rank more effectively, but your reader is going to quickly head off for the nearest exit!

Dave suggests simply reading your blog article to yourself 'out-loud.' Does it sound intelligible? Does your story come across clearly? Or do you sound more like Arnold Schwarzenegger trying to act?

A couple of really simple, but profound tips:

  • Always make sure when you review your blog post draft before publishing, to replace the word 'It' with the actual subject/topic noun. For example, say you're writing an article about your new iPhone, and you state: "My new iPhone is really amazing! It is so easy to use." In this instance, you would say, "The iPhone is so easy to use."
  • Many of us use 'teaser posts' or provide links within the body of our blog post. Typically, most people use something like, "To read more, GO HERE! or click HERE! Instead, you should use keywords/titles from the content you are linking too, such as, "Read more about My New iPhone!" or simply use the name of the site you are linking too.

What are the Key Search Terms that consumers are using today? There are several FREE on-line tools available to help you identify other popular search terms that are similar to your Keywords. Google KeyWord Tool is one. WordTracker is another.

Rich,

Keyword density, hmmm? Nice term and obviously very important in the SEO world. I guess to find the right balance you just have to trust your own judgment about it. Or perhaps ask a friend or two to give you an honest appraisal of your writings.

Keyword density is a tricky thing.  I have a guy who is doing some SEO for my web site.  He says that, in the articles he is writing for my web site,  Google likes about one link to your page for every  one hundred words.  These articles are not on my site.  The articles are being circulated on various other sites and linking back to me.   I guess that is different from Key word density.  I mean its different if I type the key word, but don't link it back to my site, right?  I would appreciate anyone's feedback/clarification on that.

All denseness aside, mine and my keywords! As Always I've learned a new trick, this coming from the Queen of "it".  I guess I needed to become a better writer at some point; so now is as good a time as any!

Loved the Back to the Future reference!

Once again you have really keyed in on valuable information that we novices need to know.

I saw it in another blog this week, but I've often used to phrase that I only know enough to be dangerous when it comes to computers, blogging intellect, et al.

Thank you for keeping us informed.  It is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Wayne

I HATE reading keyword dense posts.  Even the ones that are only moderate are annoying to read.  But, I am working to use the keywords more than in the past...  Such a fine and movable line.

Content means as much as the envelope you are stuffing!  Yeah you want to get it opened, but if you have a hot pink envelope and you open the letter and its says:

Buy a Tampa Home from me and oh yeah don't forget to buy your tampa home frome me.   Did I mention I sell tampa homes?   Tampa home buyers start here with me....

LOL.... Pretty darn boring!
