The Bridge Of Why?

"We're on the rooaad to nooowhere..." (apologies to Talking Heads)

While out looking at home with a client today, I saw something in a vacant lot down the street that caught my attention.  Since I was early, I jogged down (okay, I walked...sue me) to check it out.

Bridge left in a vacant lot

Someone had left a bridge laying in the middle of this lot!  At first, I started to wonder why, since there aren't any washes nearby...the neighborhood doesn't have a park with drainage to make a bridge necessary, nor is it anywhere near a golf course...hmm?  It looks pretty ridiculous sitting there all by itself, spanning a few dry weeds and perhaps an ant hill or two.

Walking bridge in a vacant lotLetting my mind run free for a while, this bridge to nowhere became more interesting by the moment.  (my mind running free?  A dangerous thing some times!)  There is a place somewhere that needs a bridge, but perhaps the funds to complete it are unavailable.  It is obviously new & well built...could the foundation upon which it is supposed to be anchored be faulty?  Did the developer just pack up and leave it there?

Perhaps the best thing for the old mind to do is take some symbolism out of this Bridge of Sighs and apply it as a lesson or two.

  • Make sure you plan the entire project before construction  -OR-
  • Be sure that a real need is there before I buy something  -OR-
  • Double check the washes & drainage areas prior to looking at property...the list can go on & on.

Talking to a neighbor gave me the truth of the situation:  The bridge was being delivered elsewhere & the truck had some problems.  Rather than take the whole thing to the garage, the bridge was left in an out of the way place where it wouldn't be in the way & nobody could really hurt it anyhow.

See what can happen if we start letting our fantasies take precedence over the reality of a situation?  We can get so worked up about what might be, instead of what is.  A simple situation can get really complicated really fast if we aren't grounded and ask questions of those who may know the truth of the matter.
