I have been a full time local in Crested Butte since 2000. Previous to that, I was a second homeowner, commuting here from my "city job" in San Francisco. I couldn't be happier to live in such a wonderful community. The accessibility to a million acres of National Forest makes outdoor pursuits an everyday adventure. The ski resort is superior to all I have visited in the continental US, and I can get from my front door in the town of Crested Butte to the Silver Queen lift in about 9 minutes. Traffic? Not here, unless they are moving the cows' grazing area and crossing Highway 135. In that case it's not road rage that is a concern, but a stubborn cow that is indifferent to your schedule. The public school in Crested Butte is very good due to an excellent teaching staff. The kids here grow up skiing, hiking, biking, etc. Most kids here start skiing when they are 2 or 3, so by the time they are in double figures, they are expert skiers. They even have ski or snowboard lessons for PE during the winter. As someone who has moved here from a city working in a professional career, I encourage others to do the same. It is feasible to maintain a high level of professionalism while living an amazing small town, mountain lifestyle. Going out and skiing a couple of laps at your lunch break isn't awful either. Please contact me if I can help you find your own piece of what we call "Paradise". - Diane

Sounds like a beautiful place, Diane.  It's hard to imagine a 2 year old skiing!  When I took my 8 year old daughter she had a good time but boy was it hard.
