Passports Unlock the World

Everyone needs a passport.  "Even me?", you are wondering.  Yes, here's why you and your family should be prepared with a passport:

  • You may be called unexpectedly to the missionary field, or a global emergency, in a foreign country.
  • You may win a vacation, and can't go until you have a passport.
  • You may need to travel out of the country for a family member's emergency while traveling abroad.
  • You may want to take a trip to Mexico, Canada, or the Caribbean on short notice.

To strengthen border security, the United States implemented new laws requiring all travelers to have a passport for entry into the U.S.  Soon passports will be required for all air, sea, AND land border crossings.

For instance, you could drive to Mexico, and be stuck there - not able to return back into the U.S. without a passport.

To get your passport now (instructions for CA):

1. Get a certified copy birth certificate.  You will need to get an original, stamped copy from the county in which you were born.  The easiest place is online at www.VitalCheck.com and the fees vary to $25.

2. Get your passport photos taken.  Agencies which take passport photos include: Kinko's, The UPS Store, Long's Drugs, and various pack & ship stores.  The cost is about $10 per set of 2 photos.

3. Apply for your passport.  You will have to complete application form DS-11, submit your birth certificate, and submit your passport photos to a government agency.  Bring your photo ID with you, and sign the application AT the office.  You can apply at U.S. Post Offices (first make an appointment) and at your local County Clerk's office.  Note: application form and info: www.travel.state.gov.

4. You will have to submit 2 fees with your application - $97 total (children under 16 are $82).  "Rush" service costs additional.  Note: children under 14 also need parental ID in office.

Your passport takes 6 weeks to arrive.  Many folks will soon be applying due to the restrictive new border laws, which could increase processing time. So apply now, don't delay!

Once you receive your passport, keep it in a safe place, such as a safe deposit box (take it out before your trip!).  When traveling with your passport, secure it in a passport holder.  Remember it's very valuable, and difficult to replace.

Most importantly: enjoy your trip, learn about other cultures, and return home with a "global" education!

I was one of those ones that never really thought about a passport until recently.  I just never traveled that much and certainly not internationally.  Then came the time I wanted to attend a seminar held in Toronto.  The seminar leader holds two a year one in Florida during the winter and one in Toronto in the summer.  So I got the passport.  Not so I could get into Canada but so I could get back into the US!

I eventually took a trip to Bermuda (a British protectorate) so I really needed a passport, then.

Good advice.

Hi Regina:

After all these years, I just got my first passport last year.  Went to the post office, very easy.  They even took the photo there...

Regina:  Getting a passport is something most do not think about until they need it.  After reading your post, I did not know that each state had a different set of rules for obtaining a passport.  Since I am military affiliated, I have been able to obtain the issued Military passport.  Thank you for sharing this information.  I am going to look up how to obtain a passport in Alabama.

If you are reading these comments....YOU NEED A PASSPORT!

As Regina said.... "Many folks will soon be applying due to the restrictive new border laws, which could increase processing time."

Therefore, I would expect a 10-12 week processing time.... unless you EXPEDITE (more $$$$) the process. Since you are going to have prosperous 2009, you might as well begin to plan that well deserved vacation. Hence, you're going to need your passport.

BE PROACTIVE!!!!!!! You'll get a sense of pride for not having to say "HINDSIGHT IS 20/20!"

I am so proud of my passport, it reinforces my pride in my country! I can't wait to fill it up with all of the exciting places in the world! My first stamp was from Guatemala, what a wonderful country.

Regina- I have had my passport for a long time and I think your blog is wonderful. One suggestion you may have missed, with terrorism & homeland security it will be very difficult to get a passport in the future. My suggestion would be to go out and get one before it's to late!

We travel a lot so I do have a passport.  I have a friend and her son was out of the country, got hurt and passed away before she could get there.  She did not have a passport and she could not get one in time.

Hi Regina,

Points well made. A family member that lives in Canada was unable to be with us this past Christmas because her passport had expired and couldn't get it renewed in time to travel. Everyone should have a passport. My four grandchildren have had theirs since they were one year old.

Hi, Regina! Excellent post about a topic few people would think about. It's good advice to get it before you think you might even need it. Then you can take advantage of last-minute travels deals and go globetrotting at a moment's notice!

Have a great weekend!

Robin
