Extending almost 240 Miles across South Carolina, the Heritage Corridor stretches from the mountains of Oconee County along the Savannah River to the port city of Charleston. The Corridor was established by the United States Congress in 1996.  The Heritage Corridor is one the regions in South Carolina in which communities have stayed together, preserving their individual heritage.  It is divided into 14 counties of which McCormick County is one.  Traveling the Heritage Corridor takes a visitor through historic, cultural, and natural resources to tell the story of the history of our state.Heritage Corridor

It is a diverse history.  From the low-country with its rice and indigo, to sand hills of the mid-state to the railroads and waterfalls of the northern part of the state, one can hear music from bluegrass to spirituals to beach music!  The Corridor area, originally settled by Europeans, has specific sites of importance to the Revolutionary and Civil wars and numerous state recreational facilities in addition to its distinctive communities with their crafts, foods, and individual heritage..

McCormick County is designated as the Freshwater Coast Region of the National Heritage Corridor.  This area has influenced the history of the state beginning with the original French Huguenot settlers.  Not far from McCormick, the town of Edgefield was home to ten SC governors and leaders such of Vice-President John C. Calhoun and Senator Strom Thurmond.  The town of McCormick, itself, is a classic courthouse towns, serving rich agricultural lands extending out in all directions. Folk art and cultural traditions are strong within this region, as represented by the Mennonite food and crafts. Along the western edge of this region are Lakes Russell and Thurmond - the "Freshwater Coast" - which provides a setting for state parks and lakeside resorts.
