Is your EGO advocating your limitations?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Pareto Realty TN #251071

Are you one of those people who needs absolutely ZERO accountability?

After all, you're a grown adult and you can hold yourself accountable, right?

When you set a goal, you happily slide into "production mode" and simply get things DONE!

Distractions do not exist.

Life is GOOD!

Is this reality?

If you believe all of the above, I might be forced to offend you . . . because I don't believe you.

I think that's your ego talking.

When you let your ego take control, you find yourself justifying your limitations.

It's easier to say: "I'm doing what I said I would do because I am doing these other things that are FAR more important than those things . . . and sure, I have time for this and that because I'm so good I can always make up for the lost time later. I don't need anyone watching over my shoulder because I am the MASTER at time management."

OK!

STOP!

Pause the delusional thinking at the end of the day and look back at the day.

Assess what happened.

Be honest!

Were you REALLY at the top of your game all day?

Did you optimize your time?

What did you do today that you can absolutely know will put money in your pocket SOON?

Did you Lead Generate sufficiently to keep your pipeline full?

SPECIFICALLY . . . How many people did you make contact with today and what were the results of those contacts?

All the above is to say that when you allow yourself to "justify" your failure to achieve your goals and deny the importance of REAL accountability, you are cheating yourself and those people who rely on you (your family).

Why would take ANY risk whatsoever in this weird market. Now is the time to perform at your peak. There is no room for compromise . . . When at work . . . stay in your 20% 80% of the time . . . Work hard!

and when you're at home be present with those you love - Leave your work in the office (or car) and REALLY come home to your family.

I believe all of this can only REALLY become true when you are accountable to other people and not allowing your ego to hold you in denial.

It is what it is . . .

The largest egos out there will shun this blog post. They'll dismiss it as "not relevant"!

And those who are hearing the music are fully accountable to others and are laughing their way to the bank.

Best,

b

Ouch...get out of my EGO.  You are right.  Many times it's just easier that way...easier to hide, that is.

Barry Owen is it?  Are you sure you're not my alterego, getting in my face a bit?  :^)

The reality is, I've been goal driven most of my adult life, but my number one enemy is that I enjoy doing far to many things!   I seldom, if ever, seem content to just do the same things over and over again.  So, I never develop the benefits inherent within a dull and "boring" life that just duplicates the same thing over and over again.

Unfortunately, that has GOT to stop!  And fortunately, I "stumbled" across the book, "The Science of Getting Rich" a few months ago and it's been having a dramatic impact on my life.

I am finding that I am much more decisive than I've ever been.  I'm much more purposeful about my goal setting and I am more grateful for my many blessings in life, everyday.

I was one of the fortunate ones, yes the highly blessed ones to make my 100% Re/Max goal in 2008, but why did it take to the very last day to hit the goal?   Because I set the objective with a deadline achieve that allowed me to have entirely too much focus on other things, until the very end of the year.   Now, I thought I was working hard all year, and no doubt I was, but I wonder what would happen if I moved that target date up to Sept 30, or even June 30th?

That's the kind of bold action that my old alterego doesn't feel comfortable doing, yet why is my alterego comfortable setting the goals too low?

Fortunately, I realized late last year that I was spread too thin, between my BNI group and my Two Rivers REIA of Central IA, LLC group, and my Real Estate sales career, and family life.

The Science of Getting Rich, coupled with "Achieving the Balance" by Leo Weidner, the Bible, but a bunch of folks, and my very own "Life Creed" Audiobook is helping me get on the right track, and stay there.

It's SOOOOO good to feel like you're standing on solid ground and these three books, and my Life Creed statement have enabled me to feel very good about what I'm doing.  I'm not nearly as anxious, and for good reason!   I am in control of my own destiny and I am SOOO grateful for my many clients and talents.  Every day I'm feeling blessed in so many ways.

So yes, I REALLY WAS at the top of my game all day, including this brief time I was posting this comment!   I have been so blessed and 2009 is going to be my best year ever, because I'm going to help more people than ever reach THEIR goals!   Hip - hip!

The ego Barry is the single greatest challenge that we face in life. It says things that having you believing it is right and willleave you spellbound to it's manipulations. It is insidious and very sneaky about how it goes about doing it.

good post

Andrew, What a fantastic response!

Your energy is nothing short of wonderful . . . Aim High, Act BOLD, Think BIG . . . and while you're reading, grab a copy of "The Millionaire Real Estate Agent" by Gary Keller.

There's some great food for thought in nice alignment with all that you say in your comment.

Best,
