My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhood: Palolo
Douglas Fischer (East Oahu Realty - Selling Honolulu, Hawaii Condos)

My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhood:  Palolo

Palolo is a quiet residential neighborhood in a valley that’s roughly 2,500 acres bordered by Waialae Avenue in the Kaimuki neighborhood. Palolo is also nearly adjacent east to the Manoa Valley. Filled with lush green vegetation, some of the most expensive homes in Oahu are located here with terrific ocean and hillside views. Elevation is higher here, so more rainfall is normal.

Palolo is very convenient but is a relatively unknown community. Located less than four miles away from downtown Honolulu and about a mile away from the Diamond Head landmark, Palolo Valley is split between a fairly dense residential region and an agricultural region close to the mountains. Palolo stream bisects the valley, and the Koolau Mountain Range borders Palolo to the north.

Palolo’s location makes the community convenient to neighborhood of Kaimuki and the massive outdoor shopping complex of Ala Moana. Palolo is also within easy driving distance of Kahala Mall, Waikiki Beach, Hawaii Loa Ridge, Waialae Iki, Aina Haina, Koko Marina, and Haunama Bay.

Most properties for sale in the Palolo area are single family homes, however there are some townhomes and condos available too. Palolo has grown in popularity over the years due to its relative affordability.

Here are up to date, current listings for the Palolo neighborhood of Diamond Head.

Riders - Please wear a helmet
Hawaii homes (i Properties Hawaii)

This past Sunday my wife and I were out walking our dogs around 5 p.m.  Temperatures were cooling off and darkness was just setting in.

We live in Palolo Valley, a quiet neighborhood in Honolulu.  As we were walking, we saw a moped rider on Palolo Avenue making a right turn onto Kiwila Street.  His speed was reasonable, however it appears that he grabbed too much front brake as he was turning.  The front end slid out and he went down onto the ground.  There was another vehicle at the intersection, but it appeared to me that this was a one vehicle accident and the rider just made a mistake.

We ran up to the rider to see if he was okay.  He wasn't moving and his head was bleeding.  I was surprised because he hadn't been going that fast and he just slid out.  But it looked like he may have hit his head when he fell.

Scene of the accident - the rider fell making a right turn at this intersection.

My wife observed that the rider had bags of groceries in his hand when he was riding up to the corner.  A left hand off the handlebars and the right hand controlling the turn and the brake - doesn't sound like a good situation.

As we looked at him, other people nearby ran up to see if he was okay.  My wife and I had our dogs and there wasn't much we could do.  I noticed the gas running out of the tank onto the road and onto the rider.  I let the others know and they pulled the moped away from the rider then parked it on the curb.  I could see that he was breathing, other than that he wasn't moving.

The fire station is just down the street.  Firemen were there in minutes and he was on his way to the hospital.

Days later, his moped and groceries were still sitting at the corner.  Finally after four days somebody picked up the moped.

The rider's groceries and food from McDonalds sat here for several days, along with his moped.

I think this would have been a good lesson for all those people riding mopeds and motorcycles without helmets.  The guy wasn't riding that fast but he had his hands full and apparently hit his head a good one when he fell.

Moped, motorcycle and bicycle riders, please wear a helmet.  We don't want to see you getting hurt like this.
