My top ten 2019 Activerain posts, and what it means.
This post is inspired by Joan Cox's post of a similar theme, which got me to checking out my own statistics of views here at Activerain. The results are based on number of views.
While it was interesting to scroll through the years, I was quite surprised to see so many posts I completely forgot about, and realize I have a treasure trove of information I could be mining.
Back to topic though, it's no surprise that some common topics are always popular... tropical flowers, restaurants and food.

Living in Hawaii means access to good fresh food every day of the year. Not only from our own gardens, but also from local shops and farmers markets, and restaurants.

We usually have something growing and eat our own produce all the time. These days it's oranges and star fruits from the orchard, and pasture raised beef and wild pork in the freezer. We have our own egg laying hens, though sometimes I wonder if they aren't pets more than producers!

Pickled mango - a summertime treat in Hawaii
When mangos start hanging heavy off the mango trees in Hawaii, thoughts turn to making pickled mango.
You can only eat so many fresh ones (and that's a lot of mangos), and what can you do with all the rest?
These were made in Haiku Maui and sold by the side of the road. Just another great reason to live on Maui.

The new year is off to a good start.
It's great to come home from a vacation on the cold and wintry mainland and go "shopping" for food in the garden. With a freezer full of our own Maui grass-fed beef and a few things from the garden we've been eating quite well.

Grateful for a Thanksgiving dinner from farm to table
The weather this week in Haiku Maui is wet and windy so it's going to be nice to be stuck indoors on Thanksgiving day and do some cooking. With these short and wet days, the veggie gardens tend to get neglected, but still produce plenty of things to eat... carrots, kale, beans, beets, okra, eggplant, herbs. New beds will wait until spring, and the weeds get a chance to spread out. It's a good time to enjoy the fruits of our labors.

This crispy whole fish at Mama's Fish House was a special of the day a few weeks ago, and was it ever delicious! With the side of Asian style veggies and coconut rice, it really was too much food - and that doesn't happen often for me.
Apparently the trout are raised on a farm in upcountry Maui, in Kula. I had no idea! Perhaps a visit to the fish farm is in order.

The Piikea FOOD TRUCK COURT offers a great selection of meals for every taste.
I was searching for a good satisfying lunch to take home one day while on the south side of Maui, and thought I should try the food truck court on Piikea Street. What a nice surprise to find these four trucks:

Survive a tropical storm or hurricane with an off-grid home on Maui - and come out smiling.
Disclaimer - it's not about building materials, but more about lifestyle.
During this past Hurricane Lane event that happened in Hawaii in August, it was a good feeling knowing we were completely prepared in so many ways. Strong winds knocked down trees, which knocked down power lines, causing loss of electricity for thousands of homes. In at least one location a water line was busted when the roadway collapsed, resulting in no water service to a number of homes in Haiku. Power and water loss are … (3 comments)

We got to attend a YELP event at the Kihei Maui Outback Steak House last month, to sample some of the new menu items they're rolling out at all their locations. It was a well attended sit down meal for about 50 Yelpers and friends. We were treated like royalty, and the food and drinks just kept on coming! So many delicious things to try.

Wishing everyone a Happy Easter weekend with lots of fun things to do.
We'll be busy gathering all the eggs from our 8 new hens who are very productive, and the 6 old hens who are in semi-retirement. It's always fun to see how many eggs get laid each day. These new layers are really paying for their keep, with 7 or 8 eggs a day. The old girls aren't so great but it's hard to kick them out since they have been good producers in their time. … (5 comments)

The Thai Mee Up food truck in Kahului has been doing such good business they now have a second truck serving their delicious Thai food in Pukalani, at the Kulamalu Town Center next to Longs Drugs.

This is one of my favorite Maui food trucks because the food is so fresh and good and their prices are reasonable too.

If you're looking for a little "hole in the wall" type Mexican restaurant where you can enjoy some authentic food, head over to Kihei to this small eatery off Lipoa Street.
I heard about them on YELP, which is how I usually learn about new places to eat on Maui. I got there before 12 noon, so I had the place to myself, which is not surprising since there's only a few tables. If you remember where the video store was (forever) then you know where to find this new little grocery store at the old pineapple cannery that's been converted to commercial and light industrial spaces. Once upon a time, when pineapple was king on Maui, the Pauwela Cannery was a busy hub of activity where the train came and went, transporting workers and delivering canned pineapples for shipment to the mainland. We're big fans of the local food truck scene here on Maui, and recently we found 2 more new food trucks in Kahului, in the parking lot at Home Depot! It seems that this trend just keeps getting better, and it's getting hard to decide where to eat these days.
Gyros is the name of the new Mediterranean food truck, so of course we had to try it first. The beef/lamb gyros sandwich on soft pita bread was a winner - so tasty and fresh with tangy tzatziki sauce all over it. Just the right amount for lunch, and only $9.00 which … (3 comments)

UPDATE - THE GREEK OVEN CLOSED IN JUNE 2018 - THEY MOVED BACK TO GREECE.
We have been eagerly waiting for The Greek Oven to open up in downtown Haiku, in the Aloha Aina Center on Maui. This most recent addition to the food scene is a nice little shop right across from Nuka and next to Veg Out. Obviously they serve Greek food, and baked goods, and strive to feel like an authentic eatery on a Greek island!

October means pumpkin time at Kula Country Farms, in Kula Maui. Stop in for the free tour of their pumpkin patch and pick out your own big ones and small ones for carving and decorating. You can grab a snack and refreshments here because you'll probably stay a while. It's very inviting and there's lots of parking.
Good harvest. Look at the variety of big orange pumpkins and gourds for sale! It's been a good harvest this year and the ground is covered with these fruits of the fall season. White ones, green ones, striped and spotted ones too!

I'm showing off my red asparagus beans we've grown in Haiku Maui. They're also known as "yard long beans" but I have never been able to get one quite that long! The pods usually grow as pairs, with the occasional set of three beans pods. I like to let a few of the pods go all the way to maturity so I can have some seeds for the next crop. Otherwise, you pick them before they get too fat.
Asparagus beans can also be green, but it's kind of fun to have the red ones because they really stand out on the vines, … (11 comments)

At the Maui Country Club in Spreckelsville they are doing so well with their family dinner nights that they are announcing a new "adults only" dinner night every Thursday. Please leave the little ones at home so the adults can have a quiet evening enjoying some of the great food that Chef Sean Christensen prepares.
What are the other dinner nights?
