home maintenance: How Clean is Your Vent?

The fire department responded to a call in my neighborhood today. Grateful for our first responders, it also reminds me that I'm grateful I haven't had to experience that. The closest we ever came (and I ever want to be to that) was when my brother left a candle burning in the jack-o-lantern on the front porch one Halloween and the cornstalks fell over onto the pumpkin. Luckily, Mom spotted it just as it caught fire and the only damage was some soot on the front porch and my brother's dignity... not from having left the candle burning but from having run … (2 comments)
home maintenance: Watch Thy Neighbor's House

It was foggy this morning as I accompanied an appraiser to one of my listings. We talked a bit inside the property, then walked to the deck out back. As he went further into the yard, birds flew overhead, drawing my attention to where they landed on the neighbor’s house. At first glance, nothing amiss, but focusing, I saw not only the gutter that was coming loose but the missing fascia on the corner. With that gone, the birds flew right into the hole. A nice nesting place for them, perhaps, but not a good situation for the owner of that house.
