The Baton Rouge area in general and Ascension Parish in particular has received some exciting job and economic growth news.
Trafigura - which is an international commodity trading company - has elected to purchase an idled terminal in Burnside.  This terminal will be used to ship coal, bauxite and alumina in and out of the US.  It is expected that this purchase will create 100 permanent jobs for the Baton Rouge area.  In addition, the company expects to create 200 construction jobs to get the terminal re-opened.  In all, Trafigura is investing $130 million dollars in our community....$28 million to purchase … (1 comments)

April 2011 home sales trends numbers are available for Houston, Texas and it looks like there was a dip in unit sales volume for the month.
There were 5,099 homes sold in Houston, Texas during April 2011 as compared with 5,932 sold during April 2010.  Year to date, there have been 16,857 homes sold versus 17,861 sold during the same time period in 2010.
The average home sales price for April 2011 was $201,300 and there is an 8 month supply of inventory available on the market.

There were 1,050 homes sold in Collin County, Texas in April 2011 as compared with 1,254 sold during April 2010.  Year to date, there have been 3,135 homes sold versus 3,441 sold during the same time period in 2010.
The average home sales price in April was $246,500 and there is currently a 5.8 month supply of available inventory on the market.

There were 1,481 homes sold in San Antonio during April 2011 as compared with 1,918 sold during April 2010.  Year to date, there have been 5,137 homes sold versus 5,788 sold during the same time period in 2010.
The average home sales price was $179,900 and there is currently a 8.5 month supply of available inventory on the market.

April 2011 home sales trends are now out for Austin, Texas.  There were 1,851 homes sold in April 2011 as compared with 2,230 sold during April 2010.  Year to date, there have been 5,824 homes sold in Austin versus 6,451 sold during the same time period in 2010.
The average home sold for $264,900 and there is currently a 6.9 month supply of available inventory.  There is good news on the job front for Austin with business relocations continuing to be announced.  This reinforces the narrative of how attractive Austin remains as a business relocation destination.

April 2011 home sales trends numbers are now available for Dallas, Texas and unit volume continues to be a bit soft.
There were 3,809 homes sold in April 2011 as compared with 4,791 sold during April 2010.  Keep in mind the homebuyers tax credit was still in effect last April which led to elevated sales levels.  There have been 11,925 homes sold in Dallas year to date verses 13,857 sold during the same time period in 2010.
The average home sold for $225,200 and there is currently a 7.2 month supply of available homes on the market.

I blogged a couple of days ago about the tax incentive program Louisiana has in place to spur business relocation and growth in the digital and social media areas.  Baton Rouge - in particular - has benefited from this program. 
Just yesterday another company has announced their intention to relocation their operations to Baton Rouge!  BitRaider - based in Jacksonville - is planning on moving into the Louisiana Technology Park in the near future.  They intend to create 22 jobs over the next 9 months or so with an average pay of $51,000/job.  It is estimated that these jobs will indirectly … (0 comments)

The State of Louisiana received some great news by being ranked by Site Selection as the Most Competetive State for 2010!  This follows up Louisiana's rank of #2 in 2009.

February 2011 homes sales trends numbers are now available and it looks like it was a pretty solid month for San Antonio.
There were 1,100 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 1,250 sold in February 2010.  The average sales price was $178,100 and there currently is 7.9 months of available inventory in the market.
Year to date - there have been 2,045 homes sold in 2011 versus 2,107 sold during the same time period in 2010.  Please keep in mind that during the 1st 1/2 of 2010, the homebuyers tax credit was still in effect and driving sales activity.

February 2011 sales trends numbers are out for Houston, Texas and things look pretty solid in the Houston market.
There were 3,603 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 3,684 in February 2010.  The average sales price was $210,300 and there is 7.5 months of available inventory in the local market.
Year to date - there have been 6,700 homes sold in 2011 versus 6,540 sold during the same period in 2010.

Worth/Arlington/NE Tarrant County are out and it looks like it was a tough month for the area.  The charts and graphs that you see below are a summary of activity between Ft. Worth/Arlington/NE Tarrant County.  They are weighted averages and in February - Ft. Worth represented approximately 45% of the unit volume with Arlington at 22% and NE Tarrant County at 33%.

There were 2,390 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 2,774 sold during February 2010.  The average sales price was $220,300 and there is currently 6.6 months of available inventory on the market.
Year to date - there have been 4,496 homes sold in Dallas versus 4,984 sold during the same time period in 2010.  Keep in mind that during the first 1/2 of 2010, the homebuyers tax credit was still in effect...and was propping up sales activity.

There were 604 homes sold in February 2011 as compared with 666 sold in February 2010.  The average home sales price was $253,900 and there is a 5.1 month supply of available homes for sale in the market.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released its January 2011 employment numbers.  The Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex and the Houston/Sugarland/Baytown area created the most jobs of any other metropolitan areas in the US from Jan 2010 - Jan 2011!
The Dallas area created 63,600 jobs and the Houston area created 56,600.  In total - during that same time period - Texas again led the nation in job creation with 241,500 jobs.
