Leaving Money on the Table

Saving Money with the South Central Texas MommyI've been leaving money on the table for too long.

For years we've received incentives, invitations, and coupons for discounted and even free products. Seldom have I taken the time to use the offers. What an idiot--this is free stuff, or at least reduced price stuff. Had I grown up in the era of my parents or grandparents, the Great Depression, I would have known better. Every dollar saved in one area of life can be put to use in another area of life.

One of the things I noticed generally about people who actually experienced the Great Depression was their thriftiness, using things well past what I thought was their useful life, and a general distrust of banks and credit. Looking back on the past few years, the old timers were right on all three of those concerns.

I was looking at Twitter feed a few months ago and saw an interesting string from someone with the handle "mymemphismommy". She had a tweet about moving to San Antonio. I took a look at the website she was promoting, My Memphis Mommy. This site is a super site of bargains, discounts, tips, rebates, and suggestions about money saving ideas in several areas of every day life. Basically, how to avoid leaving money on the table.

When she moved to San Antonio, she began a new site here and named it "My South Central Texas Mommy". Another great site with deals for the San Antonio and South Central Texas area. I met with the creator of the site and concept, Amy Harvey, last week. Amy has a network of "Mommies" in several US cities who develop and provide content for what I call discount super sites.  on the Internet. They aggregate the deals and make it easy for the consumer to shop for deals. They do a good job of checking to make sure the stores will honor the deals before they are posted. This really makes it easy for a consumer to take advantage of the offers.

If you like to save money and you are in the south Texas area, subscribe to the My South Central Texas Mommy blog.

Want to see if your city or state has a "My Mommy" site? Follow me to tomorrow's post.

Sometime in May, My South Central Texas Mommy and I will host a live event for people in the area to learn about how to stretch their money and other money saving ideas. More on this to follow.

If you are need a guide to help you in your real estate search in South Texas, or anywhere else in the free world (I have a network of associates around the free world), call me. I'll be glad to help you. I'd like to be the real estate person on whom you can depend.

We are starting to see companies grow who promote coupons through Twitter, etc. Groupon seems to be the leading national right now. Realtors need to study this to learn how to incorporate it into their marketing. Anything that we can do to benefit potnetial clients is important in 2010 on.

Wayne,

I'm a heavy user of Lowe's coupon program for my buyers and sellers. They LOVE 10% off - and the coupon is usually honored at Home Depots too.  I even send one to all my Open House guests - nobody else around here does!

Wayne...juicy and yummy post.....enough cannot be said about this. I worked with a multi-millionaire who was a product of the depression and two world wars. He drove a beat up car, dressed down and brought his lunch every day. I learned so much from him over the 12 years we were together. He lived....the meaning of LESS is MORE. The beginning was hell for me...but I will never forget his words when we started......one day, you will thank me for all you are going to learn. That was 25 years ago and I am still thanking him.

Wayne- I just wrote a post about how we are being more frugal. I am not buying only Buy one get one free items and building my menu around them. We eat mostly organic so I did not think I could save but Whole Foods has some great sales and coupons. We never pay more than 19 cents for toothpaste, soaps, etc now that we started couponing. I just wrote a post about it too. Come and read my post, I think you will like it. Katerina

Great post!  In my house we think about our purchases and if we can make better choices. It is aconstant struggle;0  I would love a front loading washer and dryer....  There is nothig wrong with my maytag set that is 15 years old though- flip of the coin?  - not in this economy and our field of work- We may need that money at some point to make the hosue payment...

I LOVE saving money.  I DO have certain things that I'm a snob about, like my Oscar Mayer bacon and certain types of bread, but for the most part, I am a bargain shopper.  I will have to check this site out.

I like this idea very much as who doesn't want to save a buck. My parents lived through the depression and it was amazing how much wealth they accumulated a few bucks at a time.

Nice post! I love the idea of saving money and starting clipping coupons again a few years ago before the economic hailstorm hit. I've always bought good shoes on sale, they're a great bargain because they'll last many years longer than cheap versions sold at some large/discount stores.

Many times I'll hear from 1st time buyers, "how am I supposed to save enough money for a down payment for a house?" Easy, start first by trimming your expenses in ways like this that don't make you give up the nice things in your life and which leave you feeling deprived.  I once did a calculation for a class I was teaching where we took my 2x a day latte habit as an example.  Let's just say that I make my own home brewed coffee at home nowadays, and ever since I did that class.

I know my grandparents, who grew up in the Great Depression, were super frugal.  I always kind of wondered . . . but the past few years, I've been wondering if maybe they weren't on to something.
